Digital antennas are a much smarter option. Make sure you purchase a model that has NTSC and ATSC capabilities, and if possible, QAM too.

That way, if you decide to ever purchase an HDTV or higher-quality standard TV, you'll be covered in every possible way for over-the-air channels.

This won't be covered under any warranty. All TV's have a fuse between the power cord and power supply inside the TV. With any luck you can remove the back cover and find the fuse blown and simply replacing the fuse will fix your problem. The worse scenario is that the surge got by the fuse and fried your power supply which can be expensive. Unless it's an expensive model I would consider purchasing another TV. If not wait to you get back state side and have a local TV repairman fix it. Shipping can get expensive. While over there, use a surge protecter. Thanks for what you do over there. America appreciates it:)

Hmmm that's a very good question. Unfortunately, Wal*Mart does not offer any official TV recycling program that I am aware of, but there are still a few options. First of all, call your local hazardous waste hotline and ask if they know of anything in the local area. Secondly, if the TV is still functional, you can use a service like freecycle (if you want to give it away) or craigslist (either give-away or sell) to get rid of it, if there is no other eco-friendly way to get rid of it. You could also google the name of your city or state followed by "recycle television sets" and see if you can find any local recyclers that way.

Best of luck to you.

Question

What is LED backlit display?

I am hearing a lot of about LED displays and all I know is that they are brighter than regular LCD TVs. Is there any other advantage? How bright are they really?

Excellent question. LED-backlit displays offer a few notable improvements over LCDs with standard fluorescent backlights:

1. They use less power than standard LCDs (estimated at 20%-40% less)

2. They are lighter and thinner than standard LCDs (some as thin as 1.2" in screen depth)

And the most important:

3. The use of LEDs instead of standard backlights allows for brightness to be more fine-tuned. It's not just that LED displays are brighter than LCDs--the LEDs are set up in a grid-like fashion, and each LED can be given more or less power, allowing each portion of the screen to be lighted individually. Frames with both bright whites and dark blacks look amazing with this feature. Standard LCDs use fluorescent backlights which, understandably, cannot be as precise with directing light as there are only a couple of lamps in each display as opposed to a cluster of much, much smaller lights.

Essentially, LED-backlight technology is hailed as being the successor to plasma screens. It takes the strengths of LCDs (low power consumption, light weight, etc.) and combines them with the best attributes of plasma screens (extraordinary color, great contrast).

As an example, some LED LCDTVs have contrast ratios reaching into the 7,000,000:1 range and refresh rates of 240hz. Most standard LCDs don't surpass 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio or 120hz refresh rates.

Hope that helps!

I recently purchased a 46" hdtv w/4 hdmi. The tv is 60 hz and not 120hz, with 1080p.Based on this, what kind of hdmi flat cord should I look for?

Also, I also want a longer cord rather than the standard 6' cord. I prefer 10'-12'.

Walmart* carries 12' HDMI cables, check your local store for brands and prices. I personally own several different brands of HDMI cables including Philips, Sony, Monster, and Vizio. I have noticed no difference in picture quality with these.
