Questions & Answers for Philips Philips 160GB Hard Disk/DVD Recorder with 1080p Upconversion

Question
What is the function of the USB connection on this unit?
It's one of the few differences the Phillips 3576 has with the Magnavox H2160, which is $50 less. What benefits does the USB port afford?

The USB port is there for you to play MP3s or display photos from your computer. Personally, I don't think it's worth the $50 difference in the price, but maybe that's just because I have both machines, known as the dynamic duo on AVSForum. I highly recommend either one but if you're only going to get one, I'd go with the Magnavox and save the $$$$.

I know that one of the functions is that you can view pictures and video clips from USB thumb drives on your tv. I also know from researching the Philips (which I am ordering) is that it comes with a seagate hard drive. That is one of the most reliable hard drives on the market (I repair computers) and to me that alone is worth the extra $$.

I'm not sure where you heard that, it would depend on your original recording speed. If you recorded it at the highest resolution (HQ) then a 2-hour movie would not fit onto a DVD because the limit on the DVD for HQ is 1-hour. I never run into that problem because I record everything in SLP and it still looks better than the old VCRs. Question
Phillips DVDR 3576H/37B
I referenced the latest version out there (per Phillips website.). After you record a show onto the hard drive, can you then later watch that show directly off the harddrive without recording onto a DVD-RW etc. disc first?
Thanks,
Pat

Hello, Pat. Thank you for your service to the USN. To answer your question: Yes, unless you want to archive a show to DVD, you never need to touch a disc. Due to working a straight night shift, I record all the prime time shows during the week onto the hard drive and then watch them at my leisure directly from the hard drive, EVEN WHILE ANOTHER PROGRAM IS RECORDING. Great machine!
Of course there are some times when there are 2 shows scheduled at the same time, so I also bought the Magnavox H2160WM9 (also available at Wal-Mart) which is a clone of the Philips, so I can record two different channels at once.

Yes... that's one of the great things about this product. And you can also watch from the beginning a show that is already in the process of being recorded... i.e., a show that you set to start recording at 7 PM, and now it is 7:20 PM and you decide you want to go ahead and watch it from the beginning is totally possible! I love it.
