Once the battery pack is inserted, it cannot be removed,At the end of the 10 years, you would have to buy another smoke alarm to replace it. It is recommended that you de-activate the alarm buy reading the instructions on the back of the alarm, before throwing away, it isn't deactivated by removing the battery pack.

I am a Fire Official, You need to REPLACE your SMOKE DETECTORS EVERY 10 YEARS without question. IF you do not know how old they are REPLACE THEM.

according to the IMAGE of this product, the product itself states ON it that the battery is sealed and to replace the ALARM after 10 years.

Because the lithium batteries last ten years and it is the batteries that need to be replaced every ten years, not the smoke alarm. It is a lot cheaper to buy lithium batteries than it is to buy new smoke alarms.
