Yes, eventually... But 160 gb HD is something like 60 hours at decent quality. That is a lot of recording. Also, you can dub out commercials if you like.

Deleting is easy. Just select what you want to delete and click on delete.

Instead of deleting, though, you can dub to DVD and save them...then delete. Really depends on what you want.

We record weekly shows and watch them, then delete. Never bother with DVDs. I also record kids shows every day, cut out commercials, and then dub to DVD for them to watch whenever.

Here's a help file with some info on how our HDDs work, deleting titles, etc.:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=12798560&postcount=243

There are also two "ahrsher" methods using SKIP codes that delete everything from the HDD. SKIP 079 + OK does a HDD Format, and SKIP 013 does a HDD Factory Check, which also deletes everything from the HDD, as described here (use these only if you want everything gone from the HDD):

Question
HDD turns on unexpectedly?
I've noticed that the HDD is running after I thought I had turned the unit off. Timed recording was not set or involved. I could stop the HDD by turning the unit on, then off again. I first suspected a difference between using the remote versus the front panel button, but now I'm not so sure. It might be related to the automatic clock setting. Does anyone have a definitive answer to this? Is the problem solved by using the manual clock setting?

Thanks. I've had the auto clock turned off for three days and the HDD did not spin up. That seems to be the workaround. When it did spin up in auto clock mode, it stayed on, even with the unit in standby. Important to know, since I want to keep the HDD off to extend its life.

The Magnavox will start up twice a day, at midnight and noon, for the automatic clock setting. The display will remain off when it does this. It will stay on for a minute or so.

If there is no channel in your area broadcasting the clock set signal then it will search but should give up eventually.

If you set the clock set to manual and the HDD activity continues after you power the unit down then something else is going on.

The response that "the previous 2008 model (2160) does not." is incorrect.

The box changed to feature "HDMI", but the hardware I/O for 2008 2009 models is identical.

ALL 2160's, both originals mfg in 2008 and 2160A's mfg in 2009, have HDMI connector on the back.

I have one of the originals as do lots of people posting in this forum:

Yes and no. The 2009 model (2160A) has a HDMI output but the previous 2008 model (2160) does not. I just recently ordered this unit from Walmart.com and received the 2009 model. Once you have the box in hand it is clearly marked which model it is, that said I don't think you'll end-up with a 2008 model this late in the year.

Regular digital from an antenna is what this is for. It comes with a digital tuner so if you receive digital signals through your antenna to you TV they will be received by your recorder. If that is what you mainly want to do then this is a fine product.

Yes. It will function like a plain DVD Recorder if you want to but video quality suffers because, like all DVD Recorders, if you stuff lots of time on one DVD, you've got to compress the video a whole lot.

The big feature of this Magnavox is the hard drive. You can record hours and hours of shows at it's highest quality settings. Then you can burn the shows to several DVD's and each DVD will have high quality video.

You can record up to 49 programs to DVD. However, the maximum total time that can be recorded varies from 60 to 360 minutes, depending on the desired quality.

The HDD can hold 600 programs, and from 30 to 180 hours, depending on the desired quality.

You can transfer programs recorded on the HDD to DVD.

AVMogul's answer (below) is accurate. My response is related to OTA sensitivity. The unit can tune all OTA digital channels, and cable channels 1-135.

answer 2
It will tune all of them, but the ATSC tuner in the 2160 is not as sensitive as my digital tv's or Dish DTVPal/TR40. Channels that pixelate on the 2160 are solid on the others, with the same antenna feed. The tuner delivers and records an excellent digital picture, but get the best DTV antenna connection you can. I don't know whether this unit is more sensitive to multipath and other effects, so don't know whether an RF amplifer would help.

Of course the number of channels being broadcast is limited to the number of channels that the cable company is sending out, and the number of over-the-air channels is dependent on the number of basic and sub-channels that the network subsidiaries are broadcasting.

The machine itself scans for channels 1-125 for analog then automatically starts searching for DIGITAL over-the-air channels 1-135. It will memorize all that it finds.

1) magnavox has the cheaper price obviously :)
2) magnavox can record digital close captioning and analog, philips only analog
3) magnavox has auto recording, phillips has "pausing" live TV. I like auto recording better since it starts recording as soon as you go to that channel instead of after you hit "pause"
4) the phillips is suppose to have a better quality hard drive which is probably why the price is higher.
I looked at both of them and liked the magnavox better for the features and the price. I can't speak for quality because I haven't had the magnavox long enough.

Bad day today... 1st sentence in Correction should have read:

The 2160 can't record satellite channels DIRECTLY thru the coax, but CAN thru a line connection to the Sat Receiver, as shown in Sketch #4 in the link given.

Correction to one item in my answer below:

You can't record any channels provided by a satellite (Dish, DirecTV) cuz everything is encrypted.

You can, however, connect a cable TV or antenna coax to the 2160 and get those ADDITIONAL channels beyond what you get via satellite.

See Sketch #4 here for aome "Optional" connections with satellite, as shown by the dotted lines:

Here again is the complete list of help files, including the workaround for the Format/Erase/Finalize bug:

You can record the following hours, depending on rec mode setting:
1-hr-HQ = 30
2-hr-SP = 60
2.5-hr-SPP = 75
3-hr-LP = 90
4-hr-EP = 120
6-hr-SLP = 180

Those are hours based on the manual, but it has the same HDD as the 3575 and 3576, which shows a few more hours at each rec mode, so numbers are approx.

You can also upgrade the internal 160GB HDD to 500GB in a simple DIY process described here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=12355769&postcount=39#HDDrep

See esp. the "Pioneers" section that describes upgrades by "normal" users and gearheads alike, along with the increased hours of recording a 500GB can hold (basically over 3X the OEM HDD).

No monthly fee if you use OTA antenna, normal cable or sat fee if you use those service providers. No box fees, facility fees, fees-on fees, fee-fee-on fees, etc.

You can record to the HDD anything that your TV can display w/o cable/sat boxes, i.e., channels that aren;t scrambled by the cableco or encrypted by the sat provider.

You can also copy VHS home movies, Many commercial VHS movies (I did 9 of 14 1st run movies on tape), pics, music, and anything that can be sent to this unit via a line connection.

Here's a complete list of help files for more detailed info:

Question
Use as a VCR replacement?
I intend to use this to replace my VCR. I currently have Comcast with the dual DVR box and HD service. I also have a DVD player/home theatre sound system.

My question is what is the best way for me to utilize the new DVR box with my current equipment?

I intend to run an HDMI cable from this DVR to my HDTV and split my cable signal to feed both DVR's, and am hoping I can output the audio from the new DVR into my DVD player.

Any ideas or suggestions?

There are many ways to build a system so your best guide would be at the AVS Forums http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=940657 thread which has a couple of pages and figures devoted to configurations.

You do not need to "use Coaxial input from Comcast box to the Magnavox recorder. Set input channel to 4" if the channels you want to record are available in Clear QAM over Comcast (see AVS for more info).

HDMI may not be the best choice to connect the DVR, it depends heavily on the TV. Some TVs generate signals over HDMI that can turn the DVR on/off at random times, and you may have to watch programs broadcast as 4:3 in wide 16:9 aspect if that's what the TV's HDMI decides is best for you.

Hooking it up with the HDMI cable to the TV and splitting the signal to feed both units is not a problem. I have my cable split multiple times. I have it feeding three DVRs, one VCR, and four TVs.
I can't answer whether or not the audio can be ouput into your DVD player. However, in the manual, it says that, "By connecting this unit to a Dolby Digital decoder, you can enjoy high-quality Dolby Digital multi channel surround sound as movie theaters."

I don't think you need a splitter. Just connect to a different output on the Comcast box. Don't need HD output just Coaxial since it's not a high def recorder. Thats how I did it. Use a different input source for each on the TV for the HD TV, DVD player, and DVD Recorder/Player. I use Coaxial input from Comcast box to the Magnavox recorder. Set input channel to 4

My clock was screwy until I went into the CLOCK>AUTO SETUP>MANUAL section. There I changed the first setting in the Manual menu from the TV to DTV and then set my station to 67 which is really my 67.1 PBS station (note I switched to the DTV setting first so 67 is not the analog 67). I may have set the time zone too, can’t remember. Hit OK… and then RETURN to backed out of the menus.

The clock has worked fine since except my PBS station time clock is a minute behind the real time. So for example when I record a show on my HDD I enter 9:59 and end at 10:59. I may play around with other stations to see if their time clock syncs up with the true time better.

OR

One could turn off the AUTO setting and enter in the time manually. Also note, setting the time manually and using the MANUAL channel setting from the AUTO setup up are two different things.

The AVS forum has more details about the workings of the Magnavox HDD/DVD 2160 unit. Wajo appears to know the ins and outs of the Mag units.
