Yes, I have tried this and it works. I think they call this "chase play". I set the unit to record House and a few other shows, and then I start watching them 20 minutes in. You actually finish the show at the same time as you would but you skip 20 minutes of commercials.

Yes, while still timer recording, just press PLAY and the show starts playback at the beginning. This is called "Chase Play."

You can then use all playback options, like FF, SKIP, etd. to watch until you get close to the record point (if still recording), then it tells you that you've caught up and it's going to live TV.

If the recording stops while playing back, it just keeps playing normally to the end until you stop it.

Question
Does the tuner output HD on component connections?
I mostly want this for an HD Tuner to provide a signal to my high resolution projector. Back when they sold us these "HD Ready" TVs, they promised we could buy an HD tuner when they come out. But now you can't find an HD tuner. What resolutions does this Magnavox unit output on its component connectors?

I don't understand your answer...

A: everything that goes thru the tuner or line inputs gets downrezzed to 480i....It does pass true HDTV thru its coax passthru if your signal is true HDTV.

If I tune in a true HD signal with the built-in tuner, will I see HD on my screen? I understand the recorder is SD, but what about watching a live HD program?

The 2160 has to adhere to the DVD 480i Std so everything thaty goes thru the tuner or line inputs gets downrezzed to 480i.

It can upconvert the signal to 720p and 1080i/p but it still started as 480i in the machine.

It does pass true HDTV thru its coax passthru if your signal is true HDTV.

There's a forum on AVS for HDTV Recorders located here:

Yes, but no guarantee that every tape will copy unless you spend $40 (google clearpix stabilizer) for a box that strips copy protection. Without a stripper, Disney VCRs in particular have proven difficult, and in a 10-tape set most will be fine and a few will be ugly.

Copy tapes to HDD, do any editing you want (remove promos etc), add titling and then high speed dub to DVD media. Be sure to finalize the DVDs so they can be viewed on any player.

Question
16 x 9 Question
Hi -
I have a 16 x 9 tv. When I record 16 x 9 stuff to the HDD and play it back, it plays at 16 x 9. (So far so good.) If I subsequently dub to a DVD, the pictures is squished to 4 x 3. This is fine if I then play back on my 16 x 9 tv because I can use the TV to stretch out the picture. (Maybe a little bit of a nuisance, but again, so far so good.)

However this is a problem if I want to play the DVD on another TV which is 4 x 3. In this case, the picture is permanently squished as the 4 x 3 TVs do not have a "wide" mode.

Is there a way to dub to DVD so that the picture is not squished when playing on either a 16 x 9 and a 4 x 3 tv? I don't mind black bars here or there, I just hate it when the picture is squished!

Thanks,
Brian

What would happen if you change the Mag to 4:3 Pan and Scan before you transfer from HDD to DVD? Might it record the DVD in a letter box form to play on a 4:3 TV?

Just a guess.

I'm not sure what's happening with your setup, but all my shows recorded in WS from a true-WS channel, like TNT-HD, ESPN-HD, etc., play back from the HDD in true WS with my HDTV set for "Wide."

Discs I make of WS shows also play back the same way, in true WS.

When I take a WS disc to a 4:3 TV, it shows slightly squished from side to side... barely noticeable in my setup and I can tell w/o doubt cuz I use TNT-HD to test these things. TNT's logo is a perfect cricle, so any aspect effects can be easily seen.

On my 4:3 TVs, I can only see the slight squish if I compare thatr TNT circle to a live TNT program... very hard to see any squish.

The 2160 doesn't set the "WS flag" which tells players that the show is a WS program and allows the player's aspect control for 16:9, 4:3 Letterbox, or Pan & Scan, to reshape the show for a 4:3 TV. That's why your TV controls don't affect a 2160's WS recordings.

Question
Will "TV Guide on screen" be available?
"TV Guide on screen" allows scheduling of recordings up to eight days in the future and is a feature of a Panasonic and also of a Sony DVR that we have.

http://www.tvguide.com/listings/default.aspx provides an example of the data. When this data is available through a DVR directly, it greatly simplifies the recording and replay process.

Except for this Magnavox model, I cannot find any other product like it, except as a lease through a cable or satellite provider.

If "TV Guide on screen" will become available for this product, we will purchase one of these.

I, too, looked long and hard before finding this DVR. I also have a Panasonic DVR with hard drive, and up until my cable company went digital, I was getting the FREE TV Guide listings for programming purposes! Ever since the switch, that capability has not been available on my old machine (which I still use). I'm not willing to pay a monthly charge to my cable provider or to TiVo, so I spend two to three minutes each morning manually programming the TV shows I want to record into the machine.

Another difference between the 2160 and 2160A is in dubbing. Using the 2160, when dubbing from setup, after you click on item to be dubbed you can start the dubbing process. If you are using the 2160A, after you click the item to be dubbed, before you can start the process, you must click the d-dubbing button on the remote. (Seems like an added unnecessary step)

Yes except w/an A at end... H2160MW9A.

Mfg dates for the "A" version are all in 2009. The original non-A versions were all sold with 2008 mfg dates on back sticker.

The "A" has a separate manual, a SATA HDD instead of a PATA, and added Yes/No Dialog to stop a recording, and an HDMI Control feature that turns compatible HDTVs on and off and auto-select the HDMI input.

The literal answer to "can you add" is NO, you cannot add an HDD in the same simple way as a TIVO lets you expand storage.

The Magnavox supports only one HDD, and there is extensive info at AVS on how to replace the 160GB internal with up to a 500GB internal drive, or as wajo2 said, you can have an external HDD. For both of these alternatives you have to open the case and fiddle with cabling so it is not a task for those who are technically challenged.

Yes, as many as you need, up to 500GB each. Can use ESATA enclosure plus Toaster for active drive. Drives are portable from one machine to another 2160 and retain all recorded titles and timer rec programs intact... no reformatting reqd.

No, only one tuner.

You can play DVDs in other machines after you Finalize them in the 2160.

I found a simple work-around for the FW bug that has prevented Finalizing if any timer rec programs are set:

Select L3 (DV) input as the Source, then go to Disc Edit > Finalize.

The disc has to be fully loaded before the Finalize option becomes available.

This also works for Format and Erase of RW discs. For a Format, make sure the machine is on L3 BEFORE you insert a new, blank RW disc because the formatting process occurs immediately on load.

The answer to the first question is NO. While the H2160 has NTSC, ATSC and clear QAM recording capability it may record only one program at a given time.

The answer to the second question is YES and No. This will depend upon the disc format and age or specifications of the other DVD players. For best compatability use DVD-R discs and finalize them before using in other DVD players. Older DVD players may not support the later DVD+R format.

The Magnavox H2160 is equipped with a DVD Drive rated at 8x. Burning speeds greater than 1X may be used during the high-speed dubbing feature.

I've found the best results using Taiyo Yuden Premium Line 8X DVD-R media sold by several online sellers, including supermediastore and rima.

Avoid the Taiyo Yuden Value Line discs that are "seconds" as they do not meet the quality standards of Premium Line media.

When using 16x retail store discs you should be aware that 16x discs require higher laser power than with 8x discs. Therefore when using 16x discs there is the potential that laser assembly longevity may be reduced.

Upon occasion I've used selected lots of Verbatim, Sony and Maxell media in my Magnavox, Philips and Panasonic recorders.

Avoid CMC manufactured discs. (MIT is the manufacturer designation.) TDK, Memorex and many other retail brands are manufactured by CMC.
