I came here to update my review, but didn't see a way to do it. After I owned the vacuum six months, the bottom door of the dirt cup fell into the garbage when I was emptying it. It was attached by a plastic hinge which broke off. Luckly, I'm still able to use the vacuum but it's even more of a pain to empty the dirt cup. The dirt cup itself is not designed as well as the one on the Hoover Elite (which I also own). The Elite's dirt cup has plastic "shoulders" on the inside which make the inside walls parallel from top to bottom, and thus the dirt falls out easily. I have wool area rugs and furry pets, so I have fuzzy dirt - if you're just vacuuming up dust and sand, it might not matter. The Whisper's dust cup looks big, BTW, but it holds very little.
Where the Whisper outshines the Elite (and the other cheap to moderate vacs I've had) is in the seals. While you're vacuuming, you won't be blowing dust into the air. HEPA filters do not help if vacuum cleaner body is not tightly sealed all the way through. My Elite makes the room stink like dust when I vacuum and the Whisper doesn't. Too bad I have to get dirty emptying the Whisper's dirt cup every time. Hint: I wipe the outside with a fabric softener sheet to keep it from grabbing so much dust when I empty it.
If you buy a Whisper, be sure to clean the washable pre-filter regularly. It is not inside the dust cup, it's under the plate that the dust cup rests on. It's a circular piece of foam and it's VERY easy to get to and to clean. It was filthy the first time I cleaned it, so I'm going to start doing it monthly. Oddly, the HEPA filter wasn't dirty at all. It's located behind the grill near the bottom of the machine, and like the foam filter, you need no tools to get to it - it's very easy.
I bought an extra HEPA filter and an extra belt when I bought the vacuum, but I haven't had to use either one yet. Other than the dirt cup, the Whisper seems to be very well made.
Overall, this is a very user-friendly vacuum. It was pre-assembled and I haven't had to use any tools to do routine maintenance. If I could edit my initial review, I would knock it down to 4 stars due to the dirt cup. It's a better vacuum than the Hoover Elite and than the Hoover nightmare canister that I had 10 years ago. I've had about 8 vacuums in the past 12 years. Next time, I'm going to check out the Sebo's before I buy. They're expensive, but probably cheaper in the long run.
