Questions & Answers for Great Value Great Value: Distilled Water, 1 Gal

Question

Is the very strong chemical odor and taste normal?

We recently purchased Great Value Distilled Water with a best buy date of 03-12-15

The water was bottled with water sourced in Spanaway, Washington by Richardson Bottling Company, Tacoma, WA

This water had a strong chemical smell, similar to wet paint or a very strong plastic.

We have never smelled or tasted such a strong smell in any other water or liquid we've ever purchased in a HDPE 2 (milk jug) type container.

Drinking water contains various trace minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Distilled water tastes differently due to the removal of such minerals.

It is hard to tell where or how any company that sells "purified" or (distilled) water treats the water they put out. There should not be any kind of smell or taste from a sealed container. If you smell or taste anything from a bottle of distilled water, return it immediately to where you got it and try another bottle while a manager of the store watching, open another bottle and smell it and even taste it...if the second bottle smells and tasts the same try a different brand and and then go home and email or call the company that bottled the offending product and inform them.

The weight of a gallon of water plus packaging is well over 8 pounds. Shippping costs will quadruple the cost of the water. It's best to go to the local store and load up. What you save on shipping will add several gallons to your supply.

Walmart is not a wholesale merchandise distributor, so we do not intend our private label products be purchased from us in bulk and do not offer a discount on merchandise that is purchased in bulk. For assistance with a possible special order, please contact your local store and speak with a member of management.

We also suggest contacting Sam's Club for assistance in the possible purchase of products in bulk or intended for resale.

Question

Is your distilled water really distilled? Are you sure?

The labels list three ways it might be purified- distillation, ozonation, OR reverse osmosis. Do you not know how it is purified; why not?

If the label states distilled water then it must be distilled according to law.

Distilled water has been purified by using a distiller.

Distillation involves boiling water in an enclosed system until it has completely turned into steam, which removes many microscopic contaminants such as bacteria, along with salt and hard minerals including calcium, iron, and magnesium. The solid materials are too heavy to be converted into vapor.

Simply boiling water for a long enough time will remove bacteria and salt, but not other substances

An MSDS is not required for potable water. There are no chemicals used in the process of distilled water.

If you need an analysis consult your lab.

Distilled water contains H2O with a pH of 7. Sometimes it is a bit acidic. Use baking soda to balance it.

Distilled water ideally consists of only hydrogen and oxygen, with a completely neutral pH of 7. In reality, it almost always is slightly acidic, from 5.6 to just under 7, because the water absorbs carbon dioxide from the air. A gallon of distilled water can be made neutral by adding 1/8 tsp. of baking soda, a substance with a pH of 8

Distilled water is water that has virtually all of its impurities removed through distillation. Distillation involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam into a clean container, leaving most if not all solid contaminants behind. Drinking distilled water is quite common. Many beverage manufacturers use distilled water to ensure a drink's purity and taste. Bottled distilled water is sold as well, and can usually be found in supermarkets. Water purification, such as distillation, is especially important in regions where water resources or tap water is not suitable for ingesting without boiling or chemical treatment.

The only test result I have is that my old iron was replaced with a new iron from the manufacturer and when I used the Great Value Distilled Water from the Salt Lake Municipal Water Supply, the water turned pink when it was heated in my iron. That was proof enough for me that the water was not pure distilled water. When I replaced this water with a different brand the water did not change to a pink color. Needless to say , I did not use this brand of distilled water in my iron again. And I would not drink it either or use it to make 3% Hydrogen Peroxide that I would use internally. I do believe that it is either not steam distilled water or is nothing more than plain tap water that is full of many additives, and probably is the reason why it turned pink.

Shawn, have you noticed that your distilled water changes color, namely pink when it is heated in your humidifier? I used this water in my iron and it did turn pink! I am thinking that it is not a pure distilled water, but is contaminated with some chemical that would cause that reaction when it is heated. Buying a distiller would probably be your best way to get the price down. Look at A-1distiller.com. They say the price is around .38 per gallon. This would also give you peace of mind regarding a pure product, because you would be controlling everything about it. Check it out.

In my Walmart they are near all the other kinds of gallon bottled water (drinking, spring, etc...) and a short distance from the smaller bottles of water. The water is close to the beer, wine, and soda. In what department? - I guess that would be the food department.
