A 17 quart roaster is rated for a 17-18 pound bird, But in a pinch you can put a larger bird in, and wrap foil around the lid to hold in the steam/heat. With these roasters it is best to leave them alone while they cook. Every time you open the lid the temp drops alot.

I think it's better than a slow cooker. If you use the aluminum pans to hold your food and place the pan on the rack (included), it acts just like an oven.

No, there is no timer.
