Hi,
No, the mattress is not included. However, on this type of bed, you don't need a boxspring...just the mattress.

Hi,

Yes. Since both end of the bed are finished the same way, you can chose to put the drawers on either side.

Just a nice plus if I can purchase a headboard with book case as my daughter loves to read. She needs additional storage for her books.

The space where the mattress goes is not very deep at all. You can get away with just using a mattress on it. I was a little worried when I order it cause I have a 6" memory foam mattress, but it worked out perfectly.

The Bottom of the drawers is cardboard. The seem to be sturdy though. Very easy to put together.
