We have a supercenter in our town and when we bought the bed it came with the headboard/bookshelf.

So you might check first with your store.

I had to pay everything up front, but the bookcase is not attached. So you can save money by buying it later, that is what I'm doing.

You shouldn't have any problem adding side rails to this bed since even though it does not have a box spring the mattress sits high enough to where rails can be attached.

mattress rests on flat solid planks (2 of them) that cover the entire base. Not as heavy as plywood but works well. I used box springs also on mine simply because I had them on a new set and wanted bed very high...but it definately isn't needed.
