My husband uses the heating pad. It shuts itself off after 20 minutes and after cooling down, not sure of how long will turn itself back on if it's set on low, med or high.

It's auto shut off cannot be changed to always on. The indicator lights turn off when it shuts off though, so it's easy to turn it back on before it gets cold.

This one has a 1-hour auto shutoff. You can find some that stay on on Amazon or maybe Walmart too. On amazon they go for around $13 for a real small size or $20 for a 12x15"

This pad comes with a thin sponge-like cloth. You wet it (and squeeze all excess water out) then insert into cover. It almost feels like you are putting a hot wet wash cloth on your area of pain. The instructions for using the moist heat feature are included in the box.

You cannot set it to any other time length except for the default 1 hour.
I bought 2 of these and have been using them almost daily for over a year and both shutoff after an hour.
They were very reliable BTW, and work perfectly.

it has 3 settings...low, med & high. I'm an animal lover and would think by using the settings and having blankets between the pad and the cats it should work well. Do you know they sell online or in pet catalogs a sheet that reflects the body heat of the animal as the animal lays on it? There is no electricity involved and you may feel better leaving them alone for long period of time. It definitely safe and I've used them with my elderly dogs and cats in the past. I hope this helps.

PLease be aware this gets VERY hot, but there are different settings, so I think if you kept it "always on" at a setting around 2-3, it would be ideal for your kitties.

A feature of this heating pad I liked is the ability to select/dial up a precise temperature instead of the usual Low/Med/Hi. Anything from approximately 75-180 degrees.

Yes, you wet that piece of fabric (not too wet, ring it out so it is not dripping water) and put back inside cover. When the heat starts to dry it out, re-wet it again.
