this unit is specifically designed for heat pumps and has things like defrost delays built in. I wouldn't recommend it for split units like yours.

Question

the read out screen on my YRTH 3100C1011 Digital Heat/Cool Pump thermostat says to replace batteries. How do you do that?

How to replace batteries. There doesn't appear to be any screws or anywhere to open a place for batteries.

this unit snaps onto the base with friction holding it in place. firmly grasp the front part of the unit and quickly jerk it away from the wall and the battery compartment is on the back.

just pop it off the wall or use a flat bladed screwdriver to pry it apart. If it was installed properly the base will stay on the wall. The battery compartment will be in the case part that pops off in your hand. Replace batteries and snap it back on the wall.

To replace the batteries in the Honeywell YRTH3100C1011 you have to remove the thermostat from the subbase that holds it to the wall. Once the thermostat is off the subbase, turn it over and you should see the batteries right at the top.

You can also access complete instructions on replacing the batteries in the Owner's Guide, for the Honeywell YRTH3100, which can be found at the following link:

I assume you mean emergency heat setting, that activates the auxiliary heating unit within your heat pump and should only be used if the heat pump can't keep up on a cold day.

answer 2
E M Heat is simply emergency heat. It would be what you would use if your heat pump would become inoperable. It bypasses the pump and allows you to use the heat strips in your furnace like a normal furnace.

The Honeywell YRTH3100C1011 system switch has four positions. From left to right, they are: Cool, Off, Heat, and Em Heat.

The SYSTEM switch allows you thermostat to be set to control your heating or cooling system, depending on the season.

The function of each position is:
• Cool: Cooling system control.
• Off: All systems are off.
• Heat: Heating system control.
• Em Heat: Emergency & Auxiliary Heat control. Compressor is locked out.

There are a number of possibilities for the symptoms you are describing that occur with your Honeywell YRTH3100C1011 thermostat.

One possibility is that when you make a change, the display will reference the new set point for a few seconds and then revert to the room temperature it is sensing. However, because of the numerous additional possibilities, we would recommend contacting the Honeywell Consumer Technical Support Line directly, when you are at the thermostat. That will allow one of our representatives to better assist you in determining the actual cause of the symptoms you are experiencing.

Question

Do I need a sensor to control the auxilary heat strip with my honeywell thermostat?

Want to choose the temperature that my heat strip will activate on my heat pump. Right now I only have 4 wires at my thermostat. My tech said I needed six and a thermometer that will tell the thermostat the outside temp to control it. OK-what is the part and serial number that will work with the Honeywell YRTH3100C1011. Do I buy it from Honeywell? From my thermostat to the outside air is around 15 feet. Do I need a sensor like they use in an oven? Am I wrong in wanting to only use the heat strip when it is cold in an attempt to save power? Thinking of setting it to come on at 45 degrees and saving money with less starts and stops/longer or less run cycles.

Thanks, Greg
