Questions & Answers for RCA RCA Digital Flat Amplified Antenna

Question

Do I need a converter box in addition to this antenna if my T.V. is older?

I am looking to ditch the cable company. How do I get the best reception? Do I need an outdoor antenna? What about a converter box? Do I need that also? Would the indoor antenna work without a converter box if my television is older..about 10 years old?

If you have an old tv, you still need the converter, but if you get a new tv (which now you can get it for less than $100) you don't need cable, just connect this antenna, and you'll you'll enjoy many new channels, many of them not available on cable.

Old TV won't work with this. Yes, for old tube type TV, you will need the converter box for which government gave out $40 rebate cards.

To get the best reception you need to have an outdoor antenna but you can still get reception with only an indoor antenna. You do need a converter box IF your tv doesn't have a digital converter already inside. Most new tv's (2006-present) have the converter. The indoor antenna would not work without a converter box if your television is older (2000 and before).

If your TV is 10 years old it is most likely to be analog and you will need a converter box to convert it to digital. This would be in addition to the digital antenna. I would suggest pick up an inexpensive digital antenna and try that first to see if it works. If you do not have reception you may need to go to an outdoor antenna.

I get quite a few stations without using the amplified circuit but it does improve if you plug in the transformer to activate it. In other words, the amplifier is not required for the signals to pass to your TV but it does help.

Yes, the signal booster does. Mine didn't work at all, but you can probably use it without the booster. Depends on how close you are to a tower whether the signal will need the booster or not.

You just hook it up to the tv. It has a cable hook up that you attach to the cable output on the back of your tv. You do a channel search and it will memorize which channels you get a signal for.

We get enough stations in Our area with this that we cancelled our cable. You will need to decide which stations are important to you and whether they are available with an antenna. The product is inexpensive enough that it is worth a try.

Hint: We connected ours to the cable wiring in our house and all our TVs with digital tuning got the signal off a single antenna.

Depending on your tv you will need to either pay a cable fee if you don't have a tv tuner included with the tv or one of those digital tuner boxes. The antenna will allow you to get free channels that are in your area, but it does have to be hooked up to a tv with a tuner included or tv tuner box to get it free.

I was able to pick up a surprising 16 channels in the flat lands of Illinois. I plan on canceling my cable I am so pleased with all the channels I'm getting. It's like having basic cable and I'm getting all the channels I like and more. So don't need cable.

answer 2
Probably not. Check the manual that came with your TV. If the manual says that the TV has a tuner for ATSC broadcasts then you don't need a converter box. If the tuner only handles NTSC broadcasts then you will need a converter.

Most new TVs can receive digital TV broadcasts without a converter. The FCC requires a point of sale disclosure for all TV equipment without a digital tuner sold May 25, 2007 or later. This means that if you bought your TV on May 25, 2007 or later the salesman was required by law to tell you if you need a converter box.

Tip: digital antennas do not replace the converter box, if you need one.

I would suspect a new TV would have both ATSC and NTSC tuner built in, if so cable not required, but dont expect the same reception or number of channels available with just the antenna....

Question

where to get converter boxes?

I'm getting rid of cable. I have a couple of new TV's and a couple of old ones.
So where do I get the converter boxes for the older TV's if I decided to use them? This antenna sounds like the best one for my newer TV's.

I've bought all my converter boxes in Walmart and never had a problem. I got rid of my cable in 2003 and my converter boxes work on all my old tv's, most of which I bought in the mid 1980's to 1990's.
