I have a family member with an older tv that did use a converter box. I waited til I got the antenna to see if I needed it but I didn't. This antenna is showing only digital channels on my tv and no analog even though its setup for both. So to answer your question, I am saying yes you need it.

I've bought all my converter boxes in Walmart and never had a problem. I got rid of my cable in 2003 and my converter boxes work on all my old tv's, most of which I bought in the mid 1980's to 1990's.

this item dont work well in side a house if you have a new tv that has a tuner that buiklt in then this is not the one but a standard tv box will work and this depend where you live
