Logitech Trackman Marble is "plug and play". Its that simple. Just plug it into your USB and give it about 1 to 2 minutes to recognize the device drivers and its ready to use. However, if you want to change the smaller dark gray buttons' functions and what they do, then you will need to install the CD that comes with the product which takes very little time to install. The two small buttons can be used to customize the mouse's functions giving you greater options and less time wasted while computing. For me, the small left button is universal scrolling and the small right button is for closing applications/programs. It does wonders for popup screens so you don't have to waste time clicking on the small "X" on the top right of each new popup screen. Just press and go!

I have the wired model since I tend to forget to plug in an optical mouse everytime I turn on the computer.

But it probably does have a cd, which you will use for your settings, since that is what the wired version had.

No, it's not like a scroll wheel. It (the ball) moves the cursor around your screen. The ball moves, not the mourse itself.

answer 8
The ball moves in all directions just like a ball you roll on the floor. To move up on a page (I am assuming that is what you mean by vertical) you just just roll the ball in an upward motion with your fingers. This track ball is very easy without being loose or too hard. Your thumb is the left button and your ring finger and pinky finger are the right button and your pointer and middle finger rest on the ball. With very little movement you control the cursor in all directions.

If you are in Windows you can configure this using software that comes in the CD.
Select one of the 2 small buttons & set as scroll. Then click that button & move the ball.

The Logitech Marble should be compatible for Mac/Apple versions 10.4 or later, but may or may not work for version 10.6 due to driver issues. Update the drivers if necessary. The Logitech Marble that I have and love using uses a regular 2.0/3.0 style USB connections. The Mac/Apple USB connections are half the size, therefore you may need a USB converter because regular USBs aren't the same size as a Mac USB is.
