No, unfortunately after 30 days you start afresh, no rollover. So even if you refill before your service end date, it restarts at 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 30mb of data.

No they do not carry over. It's a use it or lose it plan.

Also, if you plan to keep your number, you have to make sure it's paid every 30 days or lose your number.

No. They should say 30 days OR 1,000 minutes. But think about it like this, if you use up the 1,000 minutes in 25 days and refresh that works out to about $36 for the month...can't beat that. If you find you are running out of your 1,000 minutes in fewer than three weeks, just get the $45 unlimited card instead.

The minutes stop after you use them all or 30 days, whichever is sooner. You do not get added days when you add minutes, they do not carry over after the 30 days are over. Akin to use or lose.

Each text message is limited to 160 characters, letters, numbers and spaces. The picture texts are limited to 1000 characters. So, each time you hit the send button that is one text. Yes one text is used each time you send or receive one. Hope this helps!

yeah, you don't have to buy the same plan every month. I used to buy the unlimited cards but I didn't have enough money one month, so I went to the $30 card and realized I don't need more than 1000 minutes or texts every month so I've never gone back to unlimited.

answer 2
You can keep your existing number very simply. You activate your phone online, enter your existing number and it's done! The site tells you it could take up to 24 hours, but mine was working in less than 1 hour. Although I haven't tried it yet, my understanding is you can renew your minutes automatically by entering your credit/debit card online and choosing automatic refill every month.

no, it's not split at all! You get 1000 minutes AND 1000 texts. If you get your balance online, they are two COMPLETELY separate numbers. You could have not used your phone for calls at all but text a lot, and you would still have your full 1000 minutes but let's say 300 texts left, or vice versa.

It depends, really. Yes and no. I used to have Sprint and when I tried to transfer my number over, it was complicated and took about a week for them to tell me it couldn't be done for my situation. My boyfriend switched from Verizon and he had his number within a couple days, though StraightTalk uses Verizon's towers so that's probably why it was so easy for him.

Question

Cancel prior cell phone service?

If you are switching your phone number over, do you have to cancel your service with your current provider or does Straight Talk do that? If you have to do it, do you do it before or after you activate Straight Talk phone? I'm just worried about being left with no phone service in meantime, especially if there is a problem with Straight Talk activation. We only have one cell phone, no landline as backup.

I bought the phone and contacted Straight Talk first. I went through all the steps required because I didn't want to be without service either. I did have to contact my previous provider and let them know I was "porting" my number over to straight talk. They informed me that would cancel the service with them when the number transfer was complete.

I was told it would take a full day for that to happen, but it didn't take that long. That evening during the change over my husband wasn't able to reach me, but my son was. So who knows. It is possible you will temporarily be without service during the change over.

That was my experience with US Cellular, but it may be wise to check with your current carrier. Be prepared for them to offer you the moon and stars to stay!!

All in all it was a fairly simple process, and not terribly inconvenient.

Per the FAQ on straighttalk.com:

Can I transfer my current phone number to a Straight Talk phone?

Yes, you may transfer your telephone number from another company to Straight Talk. To port in your existing telephone number to your Straight Talk phone, the number you are porting must be active with your current service provider.

You need to request Straight Talk to port in your number, Straight Talk will process your request in your behalf. In order to request the transfer and initiate the activation process please go to www.straighttalk.com/Activate,and select the radio button option "Activate my phone with a number transferred from another company."

The transferring of your number to a new Straight Talk might take a few hours; however, if there are any delays from your current wireless carrier, the transfer process could take up to 7 days and in the case of landline numbers, transfers may take up to 30 days.

Your new Straight Talk will be ready to complete activation when your old phone stops working.

I activated my Straight Talk phone by calling customer service instead of using the internet. They did all of it for me. I was without my phone only for a few minutes. It is a good company to deal with.
