I don't know where the other person (who answered this question) got his information from, BUT, this unit does NOT have an ATSC Built-in Tuner. Whatever unit you are looking for, if it does not have an ATSC built-in Tuner, then it will not receive a TV Video signal. PERIOD! If you connect through a Cable box, that may be a different story.

I went to the Magnavox site and they state this model ZV427MG9 has a digital tuner and records Built-in ATSC/NTSC Tuner (SD Quality Output, C-QAM).

So yes, it does.

Currently, there are NO VCRs or DVD/VCR combo Units out there that can record from the TV to the VCR... regardless of whether the unit has a built-in ATSC Tuner. The VCR can NOT record the Digital Signal. ONLY the DVD/DVR can.

Your DVD recording MUST be 'finalized', before it will play in other DVD players. I was confused, at first like you. Then, I found the statement about 'finalizing' your DVD for it to play in other DVD players, in the manual. Since then, I have had NO problems. This unit will record on both DVD-R and DVD+R blank discs. One thing, that I haven't figured out is which 'format', DVD-R or DVD+R is better? }:o)

Sometimes after you record to a DVD you have to finalize it before you can see it on another DVD player.

The other players you are using must play both - or + dvd's. Some DVD players will not play recorded DVD's in them as they are in a different format. I have one older player that will not play my self recorded DVD's either.

If the machine does not have a tuner, as this one does not, you would have to have a digital cable box or satellite connected to your tv for this one to record a show. There is another model in this brand on this web site that is about 25 dollars more that does have a built in tuner so you don't have to worry about it.

Unfortunately -- NO. It does not have its own tuner so it records only the channel the TV is set to. The TV can be on or off but you can't watch one channel and record another.
Also, this means that the unit cannot 'change' channels as we all grew up having VCRs do. You can set up a series of programmed recording events, but unless you're there to manually change the channel, it can record ONLY the channel the TV is on. If you have a cable box #or dish# this is the unit you should buy because even if you have a unit that does have a tuner #as most of the VCRs I'm still using do#, it will not be able to control the channel as your cable box is doing that -- not your TV and a VCR's tuner controls only the TV, not the box. If you have a box of any kind, you're stuck with this situation.

Yes, you can watch a different channel. As long as you have the recorder set up correctly you can record a show on one channel and then when that's finished, it will start to record the other program.

Of course. Other DVD players including your computer will play the DVD's as long as you "Finalize" them with that DVR. Otherwise what would be the purpose of this option?

Previous person(s) were looking to copy Purchased VHS tapes onto a DVD? This would be what is known as Pirating which is totally illegal!!!

You can't copy Software or Movies. How would anyone make any money if everything could be copied?

So No worries with the exception of an occasional BAD Disk in a batch of DVD's...

You will need an RF converter (like Philips 3-Way AV Selector that Converts AV signal into coaxial (channel 3/4) signal for TVs equipped with an RF (coaxial) input).

I have no digital service with Comcast and thus no "box". My coax cable plugs directly into the TV and used to plug directly into my old VCR and from there to the TV via a coax. This Magnavox unit will not work with my system unless I switch to Digital service with Comcast. I called Magnavox Customer Service and found out that an external tuner will not help me connect this unit. I am not going to spring for the extra money for getting Digital service and thus I am going to return this unit.

since comcast is similar to cable, that is actually your "tuner" I'm assuming you have a box or dvr from them? If you do, then run the wires from the out video & audio of the box/dvr to the in video & audio of the dvd player then, unhook the out to tv wire from the box/dvr & hook it to the out to tv on the dvd player. (if you don't have a box/dvr & only have a cable wire coming from outside straight to your tv, then unhook it at the tv, hook it to the in from cabel/satellite on the dvd player then hook another wire from the out to tv on the dvd player to the tv) this should work. However, when you are not recording & just want to watch tv, if you have the dvd player on, you will most likely have to have it (dvd player) on channel 3 or 4 to watch or just turn it off & don't worry about it. When recording, it (dvd player)probably has to be on channel 3 or 4, whatever shows on your tv screen, is what it will record. hope this helps

If you can find something that isn't copyright protected. This unit, being new, has a chip that identifies every possible signal - even some that aren't there and blocks it from copy. I didn't even get a copy of my own home movies of my children playing ball and in school programs to copy from VHS to DVD. Blocked due to copy protection. Called tech support and they say it must have been where we recorded something on the tape from TV and it had a signal in it. When we recorded over the TV show the "macrovision" signal remained. This thing is junk.

You should be able to, you will need an s-video wire & the the rca jacks that are color coordinated on both ends with red, white & yellow. Hook all these up on your old unit in the "out" slots, to the in slots on the new one. you will more than likely have to put the old unit on the A/V out channel to get it to work, otherwise it will record whatever is coming from your cable/satellite box. I'd use a Re-writeable dvd disk, that way you can run a test first, & will be able to use the disk again. hope this helps
