I don't have to have an HD television for this system, do I? I have an older television which I'm happy with and have no intentions of upgrading at this time.

Nope, just can hook up to any tv with audio and video cable plugs in the back. I had an old analog tv hooked up to it for a while.

Depends what plugs are available on the back or side of your particular tv.

Optical would prob only be available on back of cable or sat box. To get image to TV use HDMI cable (best) or video cables.

there is no optical plug on that TV but no biggie just use an HDMI cable instead. You wont notice the difference as this particular receiver is not the best out there. If this were a $500 receiver I might have a different story but as is just go with HDMI...

If there is no optical output on your TV, then you need to go with the RCA cords.

It is best to refer to the TV manual to see if there is an Optical port for OUTPUT. If there is no Optical port then you will not be able to make the connection. However you can always connect the optical port from another device, such as, Dish Network, Digital Cable Box, DVD or Blu-ray into the RTD317 unit.

You may have the answer for this by now, but your television is listed on the Walmart site as having a digital audio out hook-up. Some of these tvs have these hookups underneath the back of the TV. They can be a little difficult to get to.

It's 5.1 and simple stereo although keep in mind these speakers are chincy little 2 inch woofers and 1 inch tweeter so, the 5.1 surround is ok in a bedroom but nothing to 'crank out' videos or what have you.

I use the thing in my bedroom with a 42 inch Toshiba Regza and it's good for 'falling asleep' movie watching, I have the 2 fronts on each side of the tv itself, the center channel in the front of the tv and then the 2 surrounds on each nightstand and it sounds as good as you can expect for the money.

They have or had a 5 disc version of this thing I used to have that's much more sturdier and wattage wise more 'crankable' for a living room and I jam it pretty loud at times. SO if you want that, the next one up is the one you need.

You can use it with any TV set, but its quality is not the best around... it is a very basic unit and has very few options/settings, also image quality and sound are poor. Put together a few more $ and buy something better.
There is a sale on a Sony system for just $18 more...

The DVD player will work through RCA cables if your TV has the ability to accept a component device (most do these days). I have the audio coming in from RCA outputs on my Dish receiver. There is also a digital toslink audio input on the RCA receiver if your TV has a digital output.

It has HDMI to play DVDs to TV. Aux for RCA for audio connection, and optical digital for audio connection. If your TV and Xbox have those outputs for audio, it seems that you should. We have TV sound running thru it.

This is not a system made to hook up things to it, but otherwise to hook it up to a TV so you can see the DVDs it plays... you cannot even experience the system while watching TV. The connection is unidirectional from home-theater to TV.
