I don't have to have an HD television for this system, do I? I have an older television which I'm happy with and have no intentions of upgrading at this time.

Nope, just can hook up to any tv with audio and video cable plugs in the back. I had an old analog tv hooked up to it for a while.

Depends what plugs are available on the back or side of your particular tv.

Do I need anything else to get this hooked up besides what it already provides?

I would recommend you use your own cable to connect from your TV to the receiver -- component video (3 cables), or simply audio cable (2 rca-type connection cables). If your Tv is HD then HDMI will work too. There are inputs for all 3 types I mention on the back of the receiver.

I'd recommend using a HDMI cable for connection of the RTD317W to the TV.
If your TV or Sat-Cable box has an OPTICAL output, I'd recommend using an optical cable for connection of audio signal.

no, the speakers are wired. The speaker wires are hard-wired to the speakers, but have bare-wire ends for connection to the RTD317W (which has speaker clip posts for attachment of the speaker wires).
Thus, you can extend the speaker wires by attaching extra speaker wire to the exisitng wires, if you need to.

I am assuming that you are referring to the rear speakers being wireless. No, those are not wireless and on any surround system I have purchased it clearly states when they have this option, so the lack of this option should provide you with a clear answer in the future.

yes, most any updated television sets will work with this sound system..you should have no problems hooking this surround system up..it is color coordinated made easy for the most novice surround sound installers..and they are 4ohm sprakers so they should be perfectly adequate..loud enough to keep you happy, and quiet enough to keep your neigbors out of ur hair!!!

Mine did, a grey one not too updated looking, it's pretty basic looking, the 5 dvd unit and one dvd unit have the same one. I'm not at home so I don't know the model numbers but I know they make one with only 1 and one that plays 5. Actually my experience was the one dvd out lasted the five one by 5 times. Like 3 years difference.

The five dvd is higher wattage volume wise but overheats if it's inside a cabinet, mine did and I ended up chucking it. The one dvd unit I have in my bedroom, is perfect for that, doesn't need major wattage, although if the dvd's are dirty it makes a whining noise, but you clean em it goes away..

It starts getting pixelated and then you hear the noise, just clean the dvd's before using em from Netflix particularly ;)

Yes, it does come with a remote - very easy to use. The only downside is that there is no button on the remote to open/close the disc drive door. You have to manually open/close it. Other than that, the remote works just fine.

answer 4
Surround sound will depend on the source of the signal. For example, when playing a DVD, for all the speakers to work, you will need to play a 5.1 encoded DVD, but not all DVDs are in 5.1. Also keep in mind that even when the disk is 5.1, the rear speakers only turn on when needed to enhance the surround effect. They are not meant to be on all the time. Hope this clears it up.

answer 6
Only when 5.1 audio is available and chosen. You have to pick surround and then it has to be available from your cable provider and or the dvd you're listening and watching, not all have them.

Mine kick in during commercials mostly or while watching a movie on cable or newer dvds and if comcast you gotta have the volume on your main box menu turned to surround heavy. You get that in the audio set up section of the main menu.

It's kind of goofy how the thing works, I find it perfect for my bedroom and have the surrounds on each side of the bedposts. Then it works good, living room it's kind of weak, but it's alright. I have this one and the higher up RCA one with the metal speakers, that one is much better.

But I got this one with the Vizio tv I bought from here.

It's 5.1 and simple stereo although keep in mind these speakers are chincy little 2 inch woofers and 1 inch tweeter so, the 5.1 surround is ok in a bedroom but nothing to 'crank out' videos or what have you.

I use the thing in my bedroom with a 42 inch Toshiba Regza and it's good for 'falling asleep' movie watching, I have the 2 fronts on each side of the tv itself, the center channel in the front of the tv and then the 2 surrounds on each nightstand and it sounds as good as you can expect for the money.

They have or had a 5 disc version of this thing I used to have that's much more sturdier and wattage wise more 'crankable' for a living room and I jam it pretty loud at times. SO if you want that, the next one up is the one you need.
