I don't have to have an HD television for this system, do I? I have an older television which I'm happy with and have no intentions of upgrading at this time.

Nope, just can hook up to any tv with audio and video cable plugs in the back. I had an old analog tv hooked up to it for a while.

Depends what plugs are available on the back or side of your particular tv.

Do I need anything else to get this hooked up besides what it already provides?

We have a LG flat screen tv and I was just wondering if I needed anything additional to get this started once purchased.

I would recommend you use your own cable to connect from your TV to the receiver -- component video (3 cables), or simply audio cable (2 rca-type connection cables). If your Tv is HD then HDMI will work too. There are inputs for all 3 types I mention on the back of the receiver.

I'd recommend using a HDMI cable for connection of the RTD317W to the TV.
If your TV or Sat-Cable box has an OPTICAL output, I'd recommend using an optical cable for connection of audio signal.

I actually use the RYMC wide flat white 6 in one cables Comcast gives you if you know what I mean, they also call them component cables I believe.

I get better performance visual and audio wise as opposed to the HDMI and this thing has both capability.

I sometimes use them both depending on what the movie is. It has optic but I find it to not work very well on my Toshiba regza 42..

takes HDMI, digital audio and component video cables as well as a rca-type audio connection.

I tried the digital audio but can't say it improved 5.1 quality over the component video or regular rca audio.

connect the HDMI output from the RTD317W to your TV's HDMI input, this will give you the best vdieo quality.
If you're using the TV's audio output for playback of audio through the RTD317W, then you should also connect the OPTICAL output (if your TV has one) to the OPTICAL input of your RTD317W - this will give you the highest quality digital surround sound audio signal

You only need a good HDMI cable. The sound can come through your TV, but it is probably best to have it go directly from the system to your speakers, which is the default.

FOR THE BEST PICTURE & SOUND USE AN HDMI CABLE TO WATCH DVD'S. REMEMBER THIS SYSTEM UPGRADES YOUR NORMAL DVD'S TO AN HD PICTURE. IF YOU HAVE A CABLE BOX AND WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEAR THE TV THRU SURROUND SOUND YOU WILL HAVE TO GET AN OPTICAL CABLE, & NO THESE CABLES DON'T COME WITH THIS SET.

no, the speakers are wired. The speaker wires are hard-wired to the speakers, but have bare-wire ends for connection to the RTD317W (which has speaker clip posts for attachment of the speaker wires).
Thus, you can extend the speaker wires by attaching extra speaker wire to the exisitng wires, if you need to.

Mine did, a grey one not too updated looking, it's pretty basic looking, the 5 dvd unit and one dvd unit have the same one. I'm not at home so I don't know the model numbers but I know they make one with only 1 and one that plays 5. Actually my experience was the one dvd out lasted the five one by 5 times. Like 3 years difference.

The five dvd is higher wattage volume wise but overheats if it's inside a cabinet, mine did and I ended up chucking it. The one dvd unit I have in my bedroom, is perfect for that, doesn't need major wattage, although if the dvd's are dirty it makes a whining noise, but you clean em it goes away..

It starts getting pixelated and then you hear the noise, just clean the dvd's before using em from Netflix particularly ;)

Yes, it does come with a remote - very easy to use. The only downside is that there is no button on the remote to open/close the disc drive door. You have to manually open/close it. Other than that, the remote works just fine.

there is no optical plug on that TV but no biggie just use an HDMI cable instead. You wont notice the difference as this particular receiver is not the best out there. If this were a $500 receiver I might have a different story but as is just go with HDMI...

It is best to refer to the TV manual to see if there is an Optical port for OUTPUT. If there is no Optical port then you will not be able to make the connection. However you can always connect the optical port from another device, such as, Dish Network, Digital Cable Box, DVD or Blu-ray into the RTD317 unit.

You may have the answer for this by now, but your television is listed on the Walmart site as having a digital audio out hook-up. Some of these tvs have these hookups underneath the back of the TV. They can be a little difficult to get to.

answer 4
Surround sound will depend on the source of the signal. For example, when playing a DVD, for all the speakers to work, you will need to play a 5.1 encoded DVD, but not all DVDs are in 5.1. Also keep in mind that even when the disk is 5.1, the rear speakers only turn on when needed to enhance the surround effect. They are not meant to be on all the time. Hope this clears it up.

answer 6
Only when 5.1 audio is available and chosen. You have to pick surround and then it has to be available from your cable provider and or the dvd you're listening and watching, not all have them.

Mine kick in during commercials mostly or while watching a movie on cable or newer dvds and if comcast you gotta have the volume on your main box menu turned to surround heavy. You get that in the audio set up section of the main menu.

It's kind of goofy how the thing works, I find it perfect for my bedroom and have the surrounds on each side of the bedposts. Then it works good, living room it's kind of weak, but it's alright. I have this one and the higher up RCA one with the metal speakers, that one is much better.

But I got this one with the Vizio tv I bought from here.
