I don't have to have an HD television for this system, do I? I have an older television which I'm happy with and have no intentions of upgrading at this time.

Nope, just can hook up to any tv with audio and video cable plugs in the back. I had an old analog tv hooked up to it for a while.

Depends what plugs are available on the back or side of your particular tv.

Do I need anything else to get this hooked up besides what it already provides?

We have a LG flat screen tv and I was just wondering if I needed anything additional to get this started once purchased.

I would recommend you use your own cable to connect from your TV to the receiver -- component video (3 cables), or simply audio cable (2 rca-type connection cables). If your Tv is HD then HDMI will work too. There are inputs for all 3 types I mention on the back of the receiver.

I'd recommend using a HDMI cable for connection of the RTD317W to the TV.
If your TV or Sat-Cable box has an OPTICAL output, I'd recommend using an optical cable for connection of audio signal.

This system does not have a DVD burner so the easy answer is no. If you are a very technical person, it is possible to do what you want with an HDMI cable but remember, burning movies is against the law so I wont explain how in any detail but it is possible just not with this unit alone as you will need a DVD burner.

Your best option is HDMI cable. Second best option would be RCA cables. I bought a 6 foot HDMI cable and it works great but on your TV you will not use the TV setting for HDMI. For some reason HDMI input on TV is AUX1. RCA and Coax will show as TV when listing inputs (at least on my RCA 55")

You need left and right (Red and White)RCA Audio cables that connect to Audio Output on the TV and Audio Input on the Home Theater system.
The Home Theater System needs to be set to auxilliary to hear the sound.

First you need to know what connections are on your TV, you can use HDMI to connect the dvd player, but need either an optical or component cables for the rest. Go with a quality brand cable, you might replace your equipment at some time, but a quality cable you will use for a much longer time. I use Blue Rigger HDMI cables to connect the dvd to my tv, rca for audio from the tv to the sorround sound, and the optical for my xbox 360.

All speakers work all of the time due to the receiver unit but any movie saying it is in DOlby surround gives better sound as the sound is more balanced for the different speakers

When it is in 5.1 surround mode. Make sure your TV is set to it. If it's not broadcast in 5.1, then the surround speaker will not work.

answer 4
Surround sound will depend on the source of the signal. For example, when playing a DVD, for all the speakers to work, you will need to play a 5.1 encoded DVD, but not all DVDs are in 5.1. Also keep in mind that even when the disk is 5.1, the rear speakers only turn on when needed to enhance the surround effect. They are not meant to be on all the time. Hope this clears it up.

Only when 5.1 audio is available and chosen. You have to pick surround and then it has to be available from your cable provider and or the dvd you're listening and watching, not all have them.

Mine kick in during commercials mostly or while watching a movie on cable or newer dvds and if comcast you gotta have the volume on your main box menu turned to surround heavy. You get that in the audio set up section of the main menu.

It's kind of goofy how the thing works, I find it perfect for my bedroom and have the surrounds on each side of the bedposts. Then it works good, living room it's kind of weak, but it's alright. I have this one and the higher up RCA one with the metal speakers, that one is much better.

But I got this one with the Vizio tv I bought from here.
