You can cook with the lid closed and it is preferred. The solution to the window steaming up is in the manual. Apply a small amount of oil. Then you can see right thru.

Yes, but the little window would cloud up and you couldn't see what was going on. I usually didn't use the top

What is the filter on the lid for?

I just got this fryer,but in the instruction manual,it does not say what the filter is for. Hubby is saying it's to pour the oil through to filter the oil,but I'm just not so sure about that.

Yes, you can get a replacement by going on the GE website and ordering it. There is also a form that comes with the fryer that has replacement parts info.

It is very easy to clean. You can remove the top part (the coated black container of oil (its like a foil when you're baking a cake - so you just remove that foil and clean it without harming the appliance itself.
