There is no tension adjustment. Very basic. But I found that changing my position drastically increases difficulty. Bend your legs, more difficult. Standing upright, way easier.

I live in an apartment and it works great in small spaces. Not too loud at all, and because it's low impact, it shouldn't make your neighbors upset at all. I would not see this as a "good" replacement for running, but it's better than nothing. Your heart rate won't get as high on this as it would out pounding the pavement.

If you concentrate then you can keep the stops from hitting the bottom... other than that, if you live upstairs, your downstairs neighbor will hear some thumping. Very little noise other than the stops hitting the bottom. I try to keep the stops from hitting. Takes a little practice. Perfect for in front of the T.V.

I would say that it is a better replacement for bike riding because of the stair stepping motion. My quads are already getting stronger.

It's great for an apartment. Just as long as you don't allow your heels to go completely to the bottom each time, your neighbor below you probably won't hear you at all. :-) It's a great workout and is super compact. If you want to put it under a couch or bed, just lift the foot pads at the same time to disengage the pulley wheel, then press the foot pads all the way down, and it slides under furniture very easily! Totally worth the small price!

I think this would be excellent for an appartment. The only noise it makes is when each step reaches the bottom, and that noise is not loud. A small piece of foam rubber glued or taped to the bottom of the step would stop that if it was objectionable to you.

Not very noisy at all. I think it maybe a great replacement for running although you can not adjust the tension so you won't be able to step at a fast pace but you will get a good workout.

No noise whatsoever. Nothing burns as much calories as running except maybe biking, but if you can't get outside this is a great alternative!

Now Iwork 3rd shift and my job messes up my sleep schedule and daily routine. I have to work it back in because I really enjoy using it. It is a GREAT buy. Thanks Walmart.com for great products!

Yes, the glutes are one major muscle group that are strengthened with this machine, especially if you do "crouching sprints" where you crouch down a bit and move your feet really fast with mini steps (not pushing the pedals all the way down). Hands and knee back leg lifts are one of the best floor exercises to lift the glutes.

When you press down with your right foot, the left step rises. When you press down with your left foot the right step rises. They should never both be down. The only way to get one up is to step down with the other.

You have to make sure the roller wheel is installed and the steel cable is properly seated in the roller groove; it comes off for shipping or putting in the box. The steel cable and roller pull one side up when the other side is depressed.

Has anyone lost weight?

I am a former fitness instructor and yes, you can loose weight with this machine, but you need to get your heart rate up in the target zone (the pamphlet that comes with it has a chart) and keep it there for at least 20 min to burn fat. You may not initially lose weight for the first few weeks, as your body is "under assault" and is retaining water in the muscle tissues. This is normal! Do not be discouraged. You will lose if you keep up a regular program and do not increase you food intake.

I have been thru that weight loss. I loss about 60 pounds 24 years ago and ahve kept it off. I know where you are comming from. Start off and just do 1 minute at a time, for a total of 5 times a day. Stay at that pace for a week and then double your routine, till you get up to 30 minutes a day. Dont start off gun ho or you will get shin splints. i have been into fitness for a lot of years. you will enjoy this

When I started using a stepper, my weight leveled off, my overall appetite improved, and I lost my taste for sweets and junk food. If the elastic bands don't offer enough resistance, try hand weights. How much weight you lose will depend on what you eat, how much you exercise, and the your own individual metabolism. There are health benefits from exercise even if you do not lose much weight.

I have lost only a few pounds on this machine. It is a great work out for your legs, but my legs tend to get tired after about 300 reps. I try to do 300 reps a few times through the day. I bought a manual treadmill off of amazon for $144 and that is where I really started to loose weight. I can stay on the machine for a longer period of time and it works more muscles as well. I work out on both machines a few times a week/everyother day. This machine is great for sculpting your legs and backside, but would recommend using it with another piece of equipment. For the price you can't go wrong. Hope this helps!

I've had it for a while now and I have lost about 5-6 pounds. I am not consistent with just this item alone (I use cardio and strength training DVD's as well) and I also do not have much to lose (15 lbs at the most), but please remember that just being active will help you lose weight. You have to also consider your diet. I applaud you for trying to get healthy.

The fully compressed height (with both peddles down as far as the will go) is just under 10 inches. It wouldn't fit under my newer desk, but only barely. It would fit under another older wooden desk. The real problem I found is that the peddles are too slippery for use with work type shoes.

I don't think the resistance is adjustable but it seems to work just fine with what is offered. It is a good work out for the money! You can go at a slow pace, fast pace, step back further on the pedals and bend slightly at the knees for a burn that will make you feel the power of this little stepper. Just be careful to balance your self so that you don't fall. It is a compact stepper so you have to get use to the size and how to balance your particular weight/size. It doesn't take long at all to get use to. The stepper comes with an owners manual that offers warm up and cool down exercises as well as heart rate info. Also has a page to order new parts if needed over time.

It's non-adjustable, but the setting is PERFECT for someone who weighs about 135-200 lbs. I find if you place your feet toward the back of the steps, the torque gives you a longer and easier stride. Then you can shift your feet toward the front of the steps and it will be shorter, more resistant strides. Hope this helps.
