There are 3 filter, I think, and they are lifetime filters. You can pull them out and wash them.

It has two filters, and they are not designed to be replaced. You just rinse them off every 3 months, let them dry for 24 hours, and put them back in the machine. Should you have to replace the filter, you would probably have to order it from Dyson.com. I would imagine that if you take care of the filters like they tell you to, you shouldn't have to replace it.

I would recommend the dc-25 animal which is made specifically for pet hair and dander. But even so my regular dc-25 if very good at picking up dog hair.

No. It does not rewind itself back. Infact to use the hose/wand with any attachments, you have to unwind the cord to release the wand from the machine.

you can unattach the hose and it has various attachments to put on the end. I imagine you would use the same one on steps that I use on my couch. It works well on the couch (pet hair/kids), so I think it would do well on steps, too.

It has a hose attached to a wand, you can put the attachments on the wand, or the hose can detach from the wand to use with the cleaning tools that are included. The tools are your standard attachments, a flat one and an angled one with a brush. The flat one works great on my couch, so I assume it would work well for carpeted stairs. But you would have to stretch the hose up the stairs, or carry the vacuum up the stairs. Hope that helps!

I also have thick carpet. The ball rolls suprisingly easier than wheel type vacuums that seem to bog down in the carpet. Very Happy with this Dyson.
