As long as banisters are directly (or very close too) across from each other you should have a problem. We installed this gate in our entryway/hallway because we couldn't find a gate that would go to the width we needed. We just found two studs that were almost across from each other and installed the gate. It's hardly noticeable that the gate is at an inch angle.

The mounting should have no trouble attaching to banister posts on both sides, just note that the sturdiness of your posts instead of studs in a wall is what you are depending on, so make sure your posts are solid and structurally sound. You may even want to drill into them with pre-holes and use a longer or larger screw if you can to ensure you are getting a really good mounting into the post. If you are worried at all about the thickness of your post you can mount a 2x4 piece to the side of your post with screws and then screw through that and into the post with longer screws to reinforce your post.

Depending on the width of the bannisters. The sides are rails that attach to the wall, as long as they're not super thin or flimsy bannisters it will work.

I'll attach a couple pictures so you can see what is used to hold it into the wall.

This particular gate does not cover a 52" doorway. It goes up to 42" at a maximum. Unfortunately there aren't any extensions available. You would have to find a gate that is more suited to your needs.

Question

Will this gate attach to an iron rail?

My mom has stairs. There is a sheetrock wall on one side and a metal rail (black wrought iron) on the other side. Is there a way to attach this gate to that?

We did have to install ours to a steel rail also, it comes with wood screws so we did purchase some that go into steel. Very safe and secure.

If you can drill a hole in the metal rail to accomdate the screw required it could work. Or you could substitute the screw with a bolt that could be attached to the metal rail. the rail should be at least 2 inches wide.

answer 3
If you have someone who can drill a hole into the wrought iron then you can use a bolt and nut combination on that side.
On the sheetrock side as long as you are attaching it close to the corner then there shoudl be a stud there. See if you can borrow a stud finder from someone to comfirm there is a stud there. The supplied screws are long enough to attach firmly into the stud.

Evenflo offers a Gate Installation Kit that may help install the gate to the metal railing. Some metal railings are too narrow to use the kit and the gate cannot be installed in that location. Please call ParentLink at 800-233-5921 for more information.

Question

What are the measurements for where the hardware would be installed into the railing and the wall? (How high from the floor?)

We installed our gate where the bottom of the bar was slightly off the floor as we had a tiny wooden piece of floor trim between the wooden floor and the base boards. The bottom of the hardware for us sits at about 8" and 27" but you can move it slightly to fit your needs. The hardware itself takes up about 3/4" each of your wall. There are four places for the hardware to attach to the railing, wall, or wherever you place it. We used this gate in our entryway/hallway because it was better than all of the other options on the market and we had a larger space than most hallway gates allowed.

It opens the whole width of your doorway. There is only a bracket mount on the wall. Unless your using a wheel chair through a narrow doorway it won't interfere. You could use it with most handicap accesible homes if you were looking for a gate though.

Almost the whole gate swings open... where the gate attaches to the wall there is a 1 or 2 inch bar that actually screws into the wall. But the gate is hinged to one of them, and other than that, yes, the whole gates swings open. There is no bar on the bottom to step over, and the width of the opening is adjustable. I do not have the max measurement, but it should say on the website what the minimum and max widths are. Hope this helps! It is a great product

With the exception of about 2 inches on each side it the gate itself is adjustable to fit the door/frame up to 42". So if you had a 42" door/frame the maximum swing you would have is 38".

This gate will work for bottom of stairs, as it swings either way. Just make sure you have adequate space to drill this into. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WOOD AND /OR STUDS ON BOTH SIDES. This gate is heavy and will pull right out of drywall.

This gate requires a hardware mounting into a wall that has reinforcement behind it (such as a stud). Please call ParentLink at 800-233-5921 for more information on safely installing onto a metal railing. We're here Monday - Friday from 8 am to 5 pm EST and would be happy to help you. The metal banister may be too narrow to affix the gate safely. Evenflo would recommend a gate installation kit or to choose a different location to install a gate.

YES IT CAN!! I purchased 2 of these gates about 1 1/2 years ago for our steps. The gate at the top of the stairs is mounted to walls on both sides and the one at the bottom in mounted to a wall on one side and a railing on the other. To me these gates were a little expensive but they were the best for the price so I gave them a try and I'm glad I did! We have NOT had any problems even with two young boys! My 2 year old is the size of a 3-4 year old and he gets mad when he can't get up the stairs so he tries to stand on it and they don't even sag! They have had a lot of use and abuse and they look and perform just like the day I bought them!! GREAT GATES!!
