You can download to a computer any design from the internet or the brother library. you then transfer those designs from your computer to your machine. A ped basic is an optional accessory maybe that is what the other reviewer meant. You can buy that if you think you need it $120 or more. Brother.com should have more info.

It does not plug into a computer in order to work. You download designs from the internet and plug in your USB cable to transfer patterns from your laptop to your machine. As for the 'throat' and 'harp' I think this machine is too small for large quilts you need one that is a pure quilting machine not a sewing and embroidery one. I have only made a crib quilt and it was difficult considering the thickness. If you want to embroider design for your quilt look for an embroidery only inexpensive used one to compliment your larger quilting model.

Yes it is compatible with Vista, I used it to quilt a twin quilt so you shouldnt have any trouble with a lap quilt.

Question

How compatible is this machine with denim and and basic quilting

answer 1
I can't answer about quilting other than it will sew the fabrics. It doesn't have quilting designs built in.

As far as denim goes, I just embroidered my pocket last night, and hemmed those same jeans. It was fine.

I also make Renaissance costumes using heavy upholstery fabric and it sews those with flying colors.

Hope that helps.

Denim with the correct needle should be OK. Quilting not a problem except the area is not large for a full size quilt..

i WOULD NOT TRY AND SEW ON HEAVY FABRIC, IF YOU BREAK A NEEDLE THIS THROWS THIS OUT OF TIMING AND WILL ALSO PUT STRESS ON THE MACHINE. I HAD THREE COMPUTERIZED SEWING MACHINES LOCK UP AND GO OUT BECAUSE OF SEWING ON HEAVY FABRICS. I AM SAVING THIS MACHINE FOR EMBRIODERY

There are many other software programs that may be used in conjunction with the machine. What are you looking as specifically?

Most of the available software is aimed at creating your own designs. As long as the design is saved in .pes format, you should be able to use it on your machine. The Brother software does not interact with the other softwares directly.

The SE-400 is designed for 120 volt usage. Voltage specifications are printed on the rating plates of Brother Products. As a result, each product is designed and CSA/UL approved for its specified voltage. Although step up or down transformer may be used, the voltage and minimum amperage indicated on the rating plate is required. Performance may vary between (step up or down) transformer manufacturers therefore, we cannot guarantee the results.

Please see the following link for the standard and international warranty available for this machine:

Question

New to Sewing/Embroidery

I am tired of paying someone else to embroider burp cloths and shirts for my kids. Is this machine easy for a complete beginner to figure out, or do I really need to take a class to start to embroider on my own? Trust me, I am fully prepared to make mistakes on my several first go-rounds but am wondering if embroidering is too tough for someone with no experience sewing or embroidering to figure out...

It is so easy it's not funny. I've never embroidered before and did it the first time after watching the dvd. The machine is the greatest thing since sliced bread ( my humble opinion) It is quiet, I love the no foot pedal option. Customer service is great ( had a question on how to increase the fonts to embroider stockings).

In my opinion, if you want to take a class for fun, then do so but you absolutely do not need to take a class to learn how to embroider. I think that you just need to play around with the machine a little bit to learn basics about it before you start a major project. Do your research as far as having correct thread weight, stabilizer for the material you are using, and the correct needle for the material (all of which is included in the instruction manual). As long as you know how to properly put together fabric, stablizer, needles, and thread, you should be fine learning on your own. All of this can be researched online.

Question

What's the best way to create a monogram?

I've been using this machine for about a month, but have realized that you can't embroider three letters where the middle letter (last name initial) is bigger than the other two letters. Like a traditional monogram. Can someone tell me the least expensive patterns or software I might get to be able to do this?

Personally, the software that I use I would recommend to everyone. I use Embird software. You purchase the basic software and then you can buy other plug-ins to fit your needs. The basic software is $144 and the plug-ins cost extra. You could also buy software from a different company, say Brother, but I don't think that they break it down into separate plug-ins like Embird does and you just have to pay for everything. The plug-ins are things like taking a photo and it will automatically turn it into an embroidery file, digitizing for you to create your own pattern, and cross stich patterns. What I like about Embird is that I just bought the basic software and I don't really need the extra plug-ins so I'm not paying $600 for all this stuff that I don't really need. I also bought a couple of alphabets that are really affordable - only $15 each and there are a lot to choose from.

To answer your question specifically, with this software I believe that you will be able to do what you want. You can combine several different patterns into one embroidery pattern and you can also insert font, save, then insert more font that you can then resize to make larger than the other font. There really is a lot that you can do with this software. I don't think that you would be disappointed with it.
