Questions & Answers for Brother Brother Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine, SE-400

Question

Can this machine make a design smaller to fit into the 4x4" area?

You will have to use your software to shrink the design and sent to the machine. Be careful in shrinking because your density and stitch count may not change appropriately and your design may not be as you would wish. Do a stitch out on a 'throw away' similar fabric. I usually do several and use different stabilizers to see what is best before I do the final design. Floriani software (expensive) will shrink your design and change the stitch count and density appropriately and in their 'Save to Sew" format will tell you what stabilizers and toppings to use what ever fabric you choose for your embroidery design. I have only used Brother Basic software and only shrink up to 20% without many problems.

The Brother Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine can only take a design that is up to 4" x 4". This product does not have the capability to take a design and shrink it to a 4" x 4" size.

answer 3
NO, it must be smaller than the 4x4 inch for the machine to even recognize it. If you want to make it smaller to be able to use it in the machine, you need either digitizing or editing software to make it smaller before loading it into the machine. Only then will it be recognized as a usable design for the machine.

Thank you for your question.

The SE-400 maximum embroidery area is 4 x 4. The machine has some resizing capabilities, but the design would have to be 4 x 4 or smaller in order for it to be transferred to the machine for editing.

There is a gathering foot available for purchase, but one does not come with the machine. You need the SA120. You can also go the Brother website, and under each machine, it will list the additional feet. That will guarantee you purchase additional feet for this specific machine.

It does not plug into a computer in order to work. You download designs from the internet and plug in your USB cable to transfer patterns from your laptop to your machine. As for the 'throat' and 'harp' I think this machine is too small for large quilts you need one that is a pure quilting machine not a sewing and embroidery one. I have only made a crib quilt and it was difficult considering the thickness. If you want to embroider design for your quilt look for an embroidery only inexpensive used one to compliment your larger quilting model.

Yes it is compatible with Vista, I used it to quilt a twin quilt so you shouldnt have any trouble with a lap quilt.

Question

New to Sewing/Embroidery

I am tired of paying someone else to embroider burp cloths and shirts for my kids. Is this machine easy for a complete beginner to figure out, or do I really need to take a class to start to embroider on my own? Trust me, I am fully prepared to make mistakes on my several first go-rounds but am wondering if embroidering is too tough for someone with no experience sewing or embroidering to figure out...

It is so easy it's not funny. I've never embroidered before and did it the first time after watching the dvd. The machine is the greatest thing since sliced bread ( my humble opinion) It is quiet, I love the no foot pedal option. Customer service is great ( had a question on how to increase the fonts to embroider stockings).

In my opinion, if you want to take a class for fun, then do so but you absolutely do not need to take a class to learn how to embroider. I think that you just need to play around with the machine a little bit to learn basics about it before you start a major project. Do your research as far as having correct thread weight, stabilizer for the material you are using, and the correct needle for the material (all of which is included in the instruction manual). As long as you know how to properly put together fabric, stablizer, needles, and thread, you should be fine learning on your own. All of this can be researched online.

The size of letters depends on your hoop. This machine uses a 4x4. That is your limit.

answer 3
You can adjust the sizes of the letters a little but without having to re-hoop your fabric. You can do single letters from very tiny (1/2 in) upto 4 inches with the hoop that comes with it. I do not have a larger hoop at this time so I am not sure if you can adjust the letters to fit a larger hoop. I just got this machine and so far it has been perfect. You can load larger fonts onto your computer then transfer them to the machine. I have not tried this yet but it is on my to-do list.

That depends upon if your picture is in .pes format. Most pics are in .jpg which is not compatible. In that case, you could go to a digitizer and have them convert the file for you, OR, you could buy the software and do it yourself (though it's tedious to learn and expensive as well).

No. You cannot do this without software to turn the picture into an embroidery pattern. This machine is very basic and does not have the capability to turn photos into patterns. If you are wanting to stitch photos, I would recommend getting software to do that. The software that I use is Embird and I love it. You have to buy the basic software which is $144 right now and then buy the plug-in that converts photos to patterns. I don't have the plug-in for converting photos so I can't really comment on how it does but the basic software is great and relatively cheap.

The machine only recognizes certain files and regular picture files like jpeg are not the correct format unless you can save them in the PES, PEN, or DST formats. You can purchase software that will convert these for you.
