Question

Does this come with embroidery needles?

Yes it does. You get one installed in the machine when it is shipped, and two extra in the needle packet. You also get some sewing needles for regular sewing. It would be very wise to buy extra embroidery needles as you need to change them frequently, they do get dull while embroidering as they go in and out through the stabilizers. What you need is Organ (brand) and size 75/11. Hope this helps.

You will need software to create your own design and save it to PES format. Another option is to use the shapes, designs and lettering to stitch out together as one design. I design on paper, print it out in real size (100%), using the shapes installed in the machine, the designs and the lettering. Then I use the printed page as a template and make sure everything is centered properly. Remember you can resize in the installed software--smaller, larger, angles too.

Thank you for your question.

In order to create your own designs, you will need embroidery digitizing software. Brother has two software programs that will allow you to do this - PE-Design Plus and PE-Design Next.

Question

New to Sewing/Embroidery

I am tired of paying someone else to embroider burp cloths and shirts for my kids. Is this machine easy for a complete beginner to figure out, or do I really need to take a class to start to embroider on my own? Trust me, I am fully prepared to make mistakes on my several first go-rounds but am wondering if embroidering is too tough for someone with no experience sewing or embroidering to figure out...

It is so easy it's not funny. I've never embroidered before and did it the first time after watching the dvd. The machine is the greatest thing since sliced bread ( my humble opinion) It is quiet, I love the no foot pedal option. Customer service is great ( had a question on how to increase the fonts to embroider stockings).

In my opinion, if you want to take a class for fun, then do so but you absolutely do not need to take a class to learn how to embroider. I think that you just need to play around with the machine a little bit to learn basics about it before you start a major project. Do your research as far as having correct thread weight, stabilizer for the material you are using, and the correct needle for the material (all of which is included in the instruction manual). As long as you know how to properly put together fabric, stablizer, needles, and thread, you should be fine learning on your own. All of this can be researched online.

Question

Can I embroider a shirt? Will it fit on the hoop?

I've embroidered a crib sized quilt top. I rolled and pinned the edges to make sure they didn't migrate under the hoop as the machine was working. You can rotate the design to make it go sideways and put the back of the shirt under the "arm" of the machine so that it would be straight on the shirt once it was removed. Just check carefully that everything is placed and pinned out of the way before you begin.

Yes, the hoop is a plastic square shape (about 5x6 inches in size), but works the same as a hand-embroidery hoop - you center your fabric (and stabilizer) over the bottom piece of the hoop and place the top piece of the hoop on top of the fabric and then snap the two pieces together, then tighten a nut to compress the perimeter of the hoop, holding the fabric in place. A shirt would be easy to hoop, as long as there aren't buttons in the way of the hoop.

However there are alternatives: you can hoop your stabilizer (but not your fabric) and then use quilter's spray temporary adhesive to attach your fabric to the hoop in the position you want (or you can use a sticky-type stabilizer). You can also hoop your stabilizer and pin your fabric to it along the edges of the hoop, or simply hold it in place with your fingerswhile the machine embroiders it (this last technique really only works for small, quick embroidery, or appliques, or embroidery where an outline is stitched first).

Many thick fabrics, like towels, cannot fit in the hoop, and so need to be embroidered as above. A shirt should fit just fine.

That depends upon if your picture is in .pes format. Most pics are in .jpg which is not compatible. In that case, you could go to a digitizer and have them convert the file for you, OR, you could buy the software and do it yourself (though it's tedious to learn and expensive as well).

No. You cannot do this without software to turn the picture into an embroidery pattern. This machine is very basic and does not have the capability to turn photos into patterns. If you are wanting to stitch photos, I would recommend getting software to do that. The software that I use is Embird and I love it. You have to buy the basic software which is $144 right now and then buy the plug-in that converts photos to patterns. I don't have the plug-in for converting photos so I can't really comment on how it does but the basic software is great and relatively cheap.

The machine only recognizes certain files and regular picture files like jpeg are not the correct format unless you can save them in the PES, PEN, or DST formats. You can purchase software that will convert these for you.

Question

How compatible is this machine with denim and and basic quilting

I can't answer about quilting other than it will sew the fabrics. It doesn't have quilting designs built in.

As far as denim goes, I just embroidered my pocket last night, and hemmed those same jeans. It was fine.

I also make Renaissance costumes using heavy upholstery fabric and it sews those with flying colors.

Hope that helps.

Denim with the correct needle should be OK. Quilting not a problem except the area is not large for a full size quilt..

i WOULD NOT TRY AND SEW ON HEAVY FABRIC, IF YOU BREAK A NEEDLE THIS THROWS THIS OUT OF TIMING AND WILL ALSO PUT STRESS ON THE MACHINE. I HAD THREE COMPUTERIZED SEWING MACHINES LOCK UP AND GO OUT BECAUSE OF SEWING ON HEAVY FABRICS. I AM SAVING THIS MACHINE FOR EMBRIODERY
