It only requires an antenna or cable if you want to record "over the air" TV with it. It has the "new Digital Tuner" for DTV, and AV jacks for your satellite receiver.

No, in fact it works better w/o a cable or sat box...less complicated and whatever channels you get with antenna or straight cable are what you'll get w/this machine... no one can scramble channels to force you to pay for box, fees, etc.

No phone line, internet connection or other outside comm. link so "they" can control your recorder and know everything you do with YOUR equipment.

Of course, that means this recorder does not have any type of TV Guide system, so you have to set timers like your old VCR (except maybe an easier menu in this recorder).

No, you just need a coax antenna or cable feed for direct tuning like your TV has, or a cable/sat box with output(s) you can connect to this Mag recorder's line input(s).

No fees, subscriptions, etc. beyond a cable or sat fee if you have cable or sat.

Actually, you can record one show and watch another. My genius cousin walked me through a million miles of cables. I also have my combo DVD/VCR hooked up too so I can convert all my old VHS home movies to DVD.

The cable companies will tell you that you can't but that is only because they don't want you recording the On Demand shows or the Pay For View movies. It's all in how you hook it up and then use your L1 L2 and then on your TV...oh...I bought a new Magnavox TV from Sam's to go with my new DVR HDD. On the TV I'm using the different HDMI and TV buttons to switch between watch and record. It can be done but not on the old TV that I had.

Yes and you will also be able to see additional digital channels as the Magnavox also has a digital tuner but will output to your TV in standard definition. Note that the Magnavox records, stores and outputs in standard definition. Note that with a cable box (assuming that you change channels using the remote for the cable box) you probably won't be able to record one channel while watching another channel or to setup recording for multiple programs that are on different channels.

Yes. If the TV has RF (coax) and at least YWR RCA connectors (or even just YW for mono audio), you're OK without any other devices.

If the TV is so old it only has an RF/coax conector, you'll have to use an RF modulator in between the Mag and the old TV.

All Connections are described in this help file:

To the best of my knowledge, it's simply a stand-alone dvd and hard drive (dvr) recorder. There's no mention of subscriptions, nor the ability to use with a subscription service.

If you need expert advice, I strongly suggest that you contact a Magnavox rep. and ask them.

Absolutely. And it'll leave a small red dot in the lower left part of the screen as a reminder that you're continuing to record. You can also jump back to the beginning of the program you're currently recording and watch that. Very handy for the evening news which is choaked with commercials. When commercials come up, just press the PLAY button and you can go watch the previous segment. You can also fast forward and fast reverse while the recording function contiues. Very handy..

Yes, you can watch a recorded HDD title or a DVD while the Mag is recording something else.

Also, if you don't have a cable/sat box or, if you do, you connect with the Mag 1st on the coax, with coax on to the TV, you can also watch a program on your TV while the Mag is recording another channel. This is described in the Connections help file here:

Oldtechnician,

Let me refer you to this article... in the past (the late 90s/Early 2000s) there was TVGuide Onscreen Programming, it did read your local information via antenna or cable after you set it up via Zip Code, Signal ETC

Just as a TIVO does.

no. this is the only thing I miss from my converter box. Well, if there is a channel guide, I don't know where it is. Maybe if you had cable or satellite. I am just OTA. With my converter box, I could tell what would be on after the program being watched, and what was on other channels. With the 513 you can display program info on the program being watched...that's all. But that's the only thing I miss with this unit. It is super. When my Panasonic dvd recorder with a 2 to 6 hr RAM died, I was heartbroken. i bought the Magnavox 513 and wouldn't trade it for anything.

No.

It knows nothing about the incoming signal ... it just records the video+audio (and close-captioning, etc) at the start & end times specified. Thing of it as a VCR -- without tapes -- and with a DVD player-recorder attached.

No guide. If used with an antenna and your station is sending the current program information, that will display on the screen just like a digital TV. Some cable systems also send that information, but not all. Think of it as a digital VCR with no fee and no tapes.

IF GUIDE INFO IS AVAILABLE, It has a multi-line Program Guide for the digital (DTV) channel you're tuned to, and shows the first 6 lines in the DTV Display screen, with any additional lines scrollable.

However, I've never seen such info in my Broadcast Basic cable TV system. Others have reported they see some info but it's NOT the multi-day, multi-channel TVGOS or similar system... prob. just today and maybe next day (?) info for the channel you're on.
