Yes, it's ready to go! It has a spare plastic auger gear (the only plastic internal part). I'm sure you can go to Prago Weston (or just Weston) online to buy parts.

NO. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO ORDER AN ATTACHMENT. I'M NOT SURE....BUT FOR THE MONEY, YOU CAN'T BEAT THIS PRODUCT. I HAVE A KITCHENAID STAND MIXER WITH MEAT GRINDER ATTACHMENT AT HOME AND I KEEP THE WESTON AT OUR HUNTING CLUB. THE WESTON OUTPERFORMS THE KITCHENAID.

The auger, burrs, and knife are metal, it can't last for ever but you can order replacement parts, but the one I have has already paid for itself by grinding pork butt, beef tips, making my own ground beef and Pork. It is very handy, it will also grind pears, apples, carrots, and much more.

The blade is stainless steel and the housing is aluminum. the gear attachment that drives the blade is plastic where it connects to the motor so you just have to be careful not to let it get too hot. IT is a light duty grinder but works great even for larger projects

I grind chicken backs and wings with my #8 regular duty, but if you want to grind ALL chicken bones then I suggest the #8 Heavy Duty. You can see the different models and comparisons of what they can handle at: http://www.northcoastpets.com/barf_hardware.htm

Yes; it does a great job. We use it every week to make raw pet food for our pets. You'll love it. We've done whole chickens and rabbits; turkey wings and necks. Dont' try hard bones like beef; that wouldn't work.

I would not recommend using this to grind chicken bones. Probably doesn't have the power and the plastic gears would likely not hold up. Maybe look into a commercial, metal gear type grinder. Though, those are much more expensive.

Chunky plastic, but have held up well for me so far. I looked for metal geared grinder and they all seem to be on the high end, more expensive models. For meat with little tendon in it, this grinder works great.

It has a heavy duty plastic gear where the grinder attaches to the machine. I'm not sure what the inside gears are made of. Everything else is made of stainless steel including the grinder blade, hopper and the auger.

Question

Why wasn't the need for silicone spray mentioned in the description? At least we could have ordered it with the unit

Just received our grinder and ground raw chicken, worked great. It has been washed and ready to go again. The instructions state that it needs silicone spray used before each use. Why wasn't this mentioned in the description of the unit. We need to use it, and are concerned that without the silicone spray we might compromise the unit. Looks like you can only order it on line, is the silicone spray necessary? Do any local stores carry this spray.. such as wall mart, home depot?

Use WD-40. OR.................

If you are in Monrovia CA go to you local 99 Cent store. They have cans of silicon spray for - you guessed it 99 Cents.

The silicon spray is to prevent rust on the grinding wheels and for nothing else.

I don't think there is a need for silicone gel as I did not use it for last one month and there is no damage to the machine. Secondly, you don't want to eat silicone gel with the grinding mix. Enjoy cooking!

The silicone spray is not necessary. You do need to oil the moving parts (like the blade, cutting plates and housing) i spray mine with cooking oil after i wash & dry them and keep everything in a Ziploc bag so it doesn't rust and is ready for the next use. I would think that occasional lubrication where the housing meets the motor would be a good thing (and silicone spray would be best) but i have ground hundreds of pounds of various meats through this thing and have not lubed it once and have had zero issues.

I grind chicken backs and wings, with my # 8 regular dugy, but would probably not try anything larger. You would want to move up to the Weston #8 Heavy Duty grinder to do what you want. The price is around $400 for a unit and you can watch #22 it in action at http://www.northcoastpets.com/barf_hardware.htm

Your question made me wonder if my #8 could do this. After all it is getting close to Thanksgiving and if I can do this more easily then sign me up!
I used the largest grinding plate, which has holes about 1/4" in diameter. The cranberries and apples came out pretty fine. I took a pic, but you can't upload them here. The pieces are about as big as Lincoln's head on a penny. I usually use a hand grinder which outputs a coarser mix, but this might work if you like a finer texture.
