For which application-motorcycle, car, etc.. I change every 3-4k on my bike because an engineer friend of mine and motorcycle rider believes that the engine is harder on bikes than cars...so we must change the oil sooner than we would versus a car. If I put this stuff in a car, I would change the soonest every 7.5k. At 4k my motorcycle oil is dark. If you want to keep your stuff at least 7 years, what's really the cost over the long run....

Question

can this oil be used on regular engines

I purchased this oil and after I put into my regular 4 cylinder engine I found out that it is for diesel engines. Is it OK to run it on a regular engine? Thanks

I contacted Shell on this oil.
Their reply,
Dear Sir,

While the synthetic Rotella 5w-40 does have an API SM rating for
gasoline engines, it does not meet ILSAC GF-4/5 specifications and is
not recommended for vehicles with catalytic converters.

Regards,

Shell Technical
The diesel compounds will plug catalytic converter according to mobile.

It is perfectly acceptable in 4 cylinder gasoline engines. Although it does not meet VW certification for the use in Volkswagens, I have several friends that use it in their 1.8T VW/Audi motors with great sucess and no signs of sludge. I have used it for years in my Volvo, BMW 4,6,8 cylinder motors.

answer 3
Only use it if your manual states that a 5w-40 viscosity oil is OK. Most gasoline engines call for 10w-30. Can't tell if a diesel engine additive package makes any difference to a gasoline engine.

Shell oil specifically recommends the use of this oil in place of a 15W-40. The only advantage a 15W-40 would have over Rotella T-6 5W-40 would be price. In cold weather, the T-6 would be much easier starting.

answer 2
Yes! I just put this in my CBR and it's just fine.

"40" is the actual weight which will work.

"5w" just means it will start in colder weather than "15w"

Yes you can, this is the only oil I use on my 2007 F350 6.0l Powerstroke diesel. My truck ran noticeably smoother when I first switched to this oil. The Ford manual also calls for 15W-40 in this truck.

ECF-3, ECF-2; Cummins CES 20081; DDC 93K218; Ford WSS

yes since your catalytic converter is the earlier type and will not be jharmed by the high sullphur content in this oil. check your owners manual for one of this ratings required for your engine:
API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, SM, SL, SH; ACEA E9; Caterpillar
ECF-3, ECF-2; Cummins CES 20081; DDC 93K218; Ford WSS

answer 2
This oil is rated CJ-4 for Diesel and SM for gas. ( C stands for Diesel ratings and S stands for gas, then the following letters are for the refinement quality/additives, they go from A-Z, A being the lowest grade). Check your book or engine compartment it should tell you what is required. Ex. My car says API of SJ, this is SM, so its better than whats required. Just watch your viscosity. Mine wants 5w30, this is 5w40. I lost 1mpg by using this.

most motorcycles are rated for this oil. it has a high sulphur content thus excellent for your bike as long as it does not have a catalytic converter.
It's best feature for motorcycle use is the heat range it can handle and not breakdown.
read your owners manual and look up the required minimum rating needed. here is a list of all the ratings this oil is approved for: API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, SM, SL, SH; ACEA E9; Caterpillar ECF-3, ECF-2; Cummins CES 20081; DDC 93K218; Ford WSS M2C171-E; JASO DH-2, MA; Mack EO-O Premium Plus; MB Approval 228.31; Volvo VDS-4.

If I were you, I would call your nearest John Deere dealer and ask them. I know that sounds like a cop-out answer, but I believe they will be truthful with you. My opinion would be that it would be fine, but I would take John Deere's opinion over mine. This is one of the best (if not the best) oil on the market.

Yes, the oil is well suited for engines not used every day because of the additive packages. It is also well suited for hard working engines. You need to check if it fits the recommendations of the engine manufacturer.
