Questions & Answers for Coleman Coleman 55W Solar Back-Up Kit

Question

Will this system work with...

Will this work with a 1000 2000-watt, 12-volt DC to 120-volt AC power inverter (instead of the one included)? Can it charge a 12-volt 35Ah cyclical lead-acid battery?

Even though, it comes with a 200watt/400watt surge inverter... I bought a Cobra 1575 unit (1500watt/3000watt surge) to use on this system.. Works great... going to upgrade soon to the 3000watt Cobra unit soon.

Yes, it could charge such a battery.. however, if you wish to have a battery to run for longer terms, I would highly recommend the "MODEL 27" Deep Cycle Group of Batteries for Solar/Wind...

Here is a link to show you the exact type of batteries I use in my battery bank with the Coleman Solar unit from Walmart..

I use this syetm with 4 6 volt batteries in my ice cream truck and I use a 3000 watt inverter with it, it runs my freezers, fridge and microwave plus i use my laptop with it. It keeps my system charged for 3 -4 days before I plug in to shore power.
Hope this helps

Not by design but you could probably angle the frame using 2x4s or rocks under the ends of the triangular brackets. I lay mine individually, flat on the ground without the frame.

No, the metal support frame has a fixed angle.

Deep Cycle Marine and RV (Wet Cell, Lead Acid) Batteries function best if located outside or are properly housed and vented.

The power fluctuates with the intensity of the sunlight. A battery is almost a necessity.

You require a 12V battery to allow your inverter to function. You cannot connect the inverter to the solar panels.

Question

What should my voltmeter show when I want to see how much current is coming from the panels? I bought 2 systems so I have 110W.

I also want to know what the volt meter should show when the batteries are full? I charged the batteries and the controller never says "full charged". I have had it charging for days and days. The volt meter says 12.8 coming from the panels to the controller and it says 12.4 coming out of the controller to the batteries.
So optimally in ideal sunlight what should the meter read in Volts coming into the controller?
The box says I should get 3.6+3.6 Amps, how do you measure that with a volt meter? I just want to know what I should be getting when measuring to know if it is in correct position or best connected.

In order to measure current, an ammeter would need to be connected in line as current cannot be measured without a load. The controller's light only illuminates at 14.2V, which cannot be achieved by all batteries. At 12.9V, a battery is fully charge, so going by the voltage reading is more accurate.

Usually C9 Incandescent Christmas lights consume about 7 Watts and there are 25 to a string. This works out to approximately 175 Watts per hour. The 55W Solar kit would provide approximately 2 hours of running time per night.
