BD550 plays VuDu (per movie charge) and NetFlix (Subscription). Has other channels (YouTube, DivX, CinemaNow, etc) but navigation is a little slow as you use arrows and on-creen keyboard to search YouTube, for instance. Requires wired connection to internet (router, wireless dongle, etc). I found my set-top box had an extra rj45 jack which acted as a hub to my residential gateway (UVerse service).

The red and white inputs are for stereo sound (left and right channels) and the yellow is for standard-definition, composite video. The Magnovox will have outputs to allow it to connect to your set, for backwards compatibility, but if those are the only connections, you don't have an HDTV, and therefore won't get any benefit from upgrading to Blu Ray.

The pictures shows a tiny slot on the right side of the unit that is consistent with the SD slots on other Blu Ray models www.magnavox.com It does appear to be an SD slot. I did read at the manufacturers website that some players can't read SD cards formatted on a computer and they may need to be formatted by the player to work. I hope that helps.

Question

Why is Netflix not an option for this player?

I spent considerable time waiting to get this item on Black Friday. The ads online said it had access to not only Vudu, but Netflix and Blockbuster on Demand as well. It does not, however, have access to the last 2. Wouldn't that be considered false advertisement, since many people wanted this item for access to those particular movie venues?

I bought this on Black Friday...was upset just as you were. So I called the Wal-Mart customer service center & the representative was able to sell me the next model up (the MBP5130) for the same price because of the misprint. I returned this one to the store & bought that one with the rep over the phone & she shipped it to me. (I originally bought the first one online, so she had record of my purchase - they may have helped, but it was in her notes that she was authorized to sell me the upgrade for that price - no problems)

At the store I went to there were 2 different magnovox blue-ray wifi players on sale, the 5130 model that has Netflix,Blockbuster, and Vudu and then the 5120 model that only has Vudu.

You're lucky if yours even connected to Vudu because mine won't connect to my wireless at all. The lady I spoke to on the phone told me that you have to update the firmware in order to get access to Netflix. But downloading the firmware did me no good bc the player wouldn't recognize or open it. Terrible product. Take it back! She told me that the MBP6000+ versions have the proper software but the MBP5000+ versions dont. Sorry!

They offered the wrong DVD players for this sale. Model # above is advertised as having NetFlix and Blockbuster however the app is not installed on the system. Took item back to Customer Service showed print out of this ad and they even exchanged it for MODEL#MBP5130 which clearly shows Netflix and Blockbuster on the box. They took care of it without any problems in which I was grateful.

Question

Why is it not allowed to stream Netflix?

A customer purchased the MBP5120F model and attempted to connect it with Netflix. She was unable to and contacted the manufacturer (Magnavox). They mentioned that this particular model is unable to stream Netflix. It is advertised here on this site that it is able to. If this could be corrected, that would be great. The customer was quite upset with this misinformation. Thank you.

i baught this player and had to call netflix to see if it would connect to the blue ray player. He said that it was not compatible with netflix and he gave me the number MBP5130 from magnavox that did have it included in the blue ray player. It was also set up for Vudu and Blockbuster. It cost a little more, but it was worth the price, and the time to exchange the player to the newer model.

Take it back to store and talk to manager and explain advertising error I did this with my 5120 I order on Black Friday and manager traded streight across with a 5130 which does access Netflex. Don't try heavy handed approach with manager as he doesn't have to honor on line errors. You want to play on good customer relations. Good luck.

The bottom line is that this is actually manufactured by Funai but marketed by Magnavox. Contacting Funai would get a better response if you speak that language. But the main problem is that you have to download the Netflix info to the Blu-Ray player's programming- easy if the player could accept online info. It's the same thing as downloading the right codecs to your computer so it can view different movie formats. This Blu-Ray player only has the VuDu info downloaded to it. I tried using a flashdrive with the Netflix driver download on it- still trying....

There are two Magnavox models that are similar and Walmart had the descriptions mixed up so people bought this thinking it had Netflix, but it was actually the more expensive model that supports Netflix. It appears that they have now corrected the description, but that was after lots of people bought it on Black Friday thinking that it did support Netflix streaming.

Every Blu-Ray player on Magnavox's website plays DVD's. Pretty much every Blu-Ray player plays DVD's.

Taken from www.blu-ray.com FAQ list...

2.2 Will Blu-ray be backwards compatible with DVD?

Yes, several leading consumer electronics companies (including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Pioneer, Sharp and LG) have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. In fact, most of the Blu-ray players coming out will support upscaling of DVDs to 1080p/1080i, so your existing DVD collection will look even better than before. While it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with DVDs.
