you can use it out of the box. you can upgrade it later. But the HDMI cord I bought was only 5 dollars and it makes the player HD... (none of the blu-ray players come with the hdmi cord in the box - just free rca's. So when you want HD buy the HDMI cord later.

Yes, however, I had to update my player 3 times when it was brand new inorder to finally get the wireless netflix to work. The updates are firmware updates, one came on a CD with the player, one I had to download from the magnavox website and burn to a CD which I then put into the player, and the third was through the WiFi on the player (and I was prompted to update, it wasn't something complicated that time). Good luck, apparently a few people have had this problem. Worked just fine after the updates.

If the only app you have showing is Vudu, then try clicking it and entering it. I found about 40 apps inside Vudu. Mine had Netflix on that front screen. Not sure if doing an update would help. But if you do the update, use the manual and do a network update and not the D/L and install of a disk.

It has probably to do with your distance to the router. How many dots do you get when connecting to NetFlix? If it's less than 3, the picture will be poor

answer 2
I figured this out myself. I returned the blue ray player and got a ps3. Much better video quality. The problem was that the wireless link between by router and the player was poor resulting in very low bandwidth. If I connected with cat5, no problem. I think read in the reviews that this was a problem with the player. The PS3 however has very good wireless and I can get HD videio.

not all netflix is HD. The faster the connection = the better the HD movies will be. HDMI cable needs to be used. Try to get max bars of signal - I used a USB extension and ran it up to my ceiling, I have 3 bars and its good enough. Re: internet speed test - results are overstated normally. 2.5 is the limit of where you need to be to just barely get HD. Barely. there seems to be levels of HD too. Is it way worse than your laptop??? My laptop and 5130 get similar quality streaming... better than my WII

Not worth the money if you're buying just for Wifi connection, better off buy name brand $70 & connect the wire be happier.

Pro: Good price if you can get it to work for you.........bought for $69 on black friday had to return due to bad or no Wifi signal from across the room. (tried 4 unit none with better signal)
had to return all 4 units...
bought isigna $20 more but great signal support Wifi g/n, search & add titles to netflix in instant queue

Con:
- very slow download..
-Wifi extremely low signal
-Netflix app only shows Instant Queue content.
-Wireless Bandwidth needs to be really good to play HD / HDX content.
