No - no backlight on this version of the Nook. The new NookColor does have backlight as it's more along the IPAD format

It does not have a backlight. Backlight causes strain on your eyes and is not comfortable to read with. You can buy a book light which works great. I bought a Mighty Bright Light from ebay for under $10 and it works great. I also bought my Nook cover off ebay, which is a lot cheaper and cuter options than buying it from Barnes and Noble.

The Nook uses e-ink technology which means it does not have a back light like an lcd screen. You can see the screen very well in bright sun light but can't see it in the dark. Just like a real book.

Yes, and you can download them to your Nook through wi-fi. I've went online to Borders and downloaded books and put them on my Nook. Kindle books will not work though, their formats are not supported. go to Feedbook.com, Google books, and EBookStack for more free books.

Yes, and any book in e-pub format will work on the reader. You may want to consider the 99 cent versions, though, as sometimes they have better navigation through the table of contents of the book. I have found the free ones, through any retailer, occasionally frustrating.

They have a lot of free titles. They also offer free Fridays, where they offer a free book every Friday. There are a lot of free downloads, you will just have to go through and check to make sure they are worth dowloading. I think I have downloaded over 65 that have been free books.

NOOK has many children and teen chapter books available on it. Visit NOOKBooks.com to browse the selection of books available on NOOK and see that your favorites are most likely all available. NOOK, however, is unable to download and play back the enhanced NOOK Kids books that are animated and vibrant on NOOK Color, which is what the review was referencing.

If you want to research specific books, you can search on the Barnes & Noble website before you purchase a nook, and look for specific authors or titles. There is a teen section, and a children's section.

There are two different screens on it. The LCD touchscreen at the bottom used for navigation and the eink screen which is used for main viewing. The eink is very similar to a book page, in that it looks almost like paper, and is black ink in the back so no color. The pictures on the LCD of the book covers and the general menus and anything else on the LCD are however color.

Yes, NOOK 1st Edition allows you to customize the font size and type face. NOOK 1st Edition features a black and white eInk screen for reduced glare in bright sunlight and long battery life, so the books are not in color. If color is important to you, NOOK Color may be a better choice as it also offers customizable text but displays everything in rich, vivid color.

Both are exactly the same except that the $189 has 3g network it can access anywhere in the world. The $149 will just Wi-Fi off of any network. I have the $149 and I wi-fi off of my home network, McDonald, or Library's free network. The more expensive is better if you travel a lot otherwise save the money and use the wi-fi only.

Borrowed library books will expire and stop being readable. They will "return" themselves to the library. You can check them back out though. I don't remember if you have to re-upload them or not.

Purchased or free ebooks will stay on there until you remove them.

I recall some feature for lending B&N books to friends or something, but I've never done it and don't know how it works.
answered 2 years, 9 months ago
By
BexReviewz
answer 2
nope, the memory is the only limiting factor. You can "lend" a book for 14 days if B&N allows it for the book and that is the only time there is a limit.
answered 3 years ago
By
ph7ryan
 - UGA
answer 3
No there is no time limit. If the ebook is not of the public domain, you end up purchasing it. On B&N you can archive it, with the Nook eventually if you download too many you will run out of space, unless you plan to save all your books on an SD card.

If you purchase an ebook, it is yours to keep. If you borrow an ebook, it for 14 days. If you lend one of your ebooks, you can not read it for the 14 days that it is being read by someone else.

Question

nook ebook reader

I am considering buying this ereader. I would like to make sure I understand everything first. You can go to McDonalds to buy the books if you don't have wi-fi at home. You can buy books and then go somewhere and download them. You can go to a store that sells barnes and noble gift cards and use the cards to buy books for the ereaders.

Do I have all of this correct?

I hope this helps

Yes, if you do not have WiFi in your home, you can absolutely go elsewhere with a WiFi signal and download books. In fact, all Barnes & Noble stores have WiFi available for book purchases.

GIft cards are available for usage with NOOK but do keep in mind that you will still need an active credit card with a US-based billing address on file to register your NOOK device. The gift card will be charged before the credit card, but the credit card still needs to be on file.

I don't know about McDonald's specifically, but if there is open WiFi somewhere, you can use the Nook to shop for books. You can also go to Barnes & Noble and read anything in the store for 1 hour, whether or not you purchase it.

You can use a BN gift card to put into your account and use until it is down to zero, and you can also go into your Barnes & Noble account to put in a credit card to make sure you don't have to buy another gift card. In my profile I have both a credit card and leftover BN gift card. The system uses the gift card first.
