If I have a wifi hot spot enabled phone and other devices are using data through it, is that covered? If I have a laptop computer hooked up to my phone via USB, is that data usage covered? These connections are not allowed on Verison's "unlimited dataplan". I am thinking of switching and this would save a second internet bill at home.

the $45.00 unlimited is very much so unlimited. my sister uses that because she has no internet at her house and uses her phone constantly to check email, facebook, and look things up. She has never had a problem and only is unable to get on when her 30 days is up. a simple refill of time and she is up and running for another 30 days.

Most definitely yes to both your questions, but its less important to view the $45 monthly plan for minutes since its intrinsically an unlimited voice plan regardless if the call is outbound or incoming.

What is metered is the data, currently the plan is for 2.5GB at 3G of monthly data which isn't much since two NetFlix movies could soak that away.

Blackberries and Androids regardless if they're prepaid respect data usage by downloading email summaries such as the title, sender, date and first few lines w/o automatically downloading embedded images like HTML email messages until you configure the phone to do so.

Blackberries are no exception and most customary usage will be well served at 2.5GB at 3G. Even if the 2.5 limit is bleached, the device drops to "2G" which feels more like a cheap DSL line and still handle emails and most web traffic but streaming video and youtube will just cause tears and misery.

lynne, since your question is being posted under the $45 Unlimited Plan, the answer to your questions are:

1. Yes, you can call anywhere in the U.S. (plus Puerto Rico and USVI) whether it be long distance or local.

2. The unlimited minutes can either be calls you make or calls you receive. No minutes are used either way as this particular plan gives you "unlimited" minutes outgoing or incoming.

When I purchased a Straight Talk phone and card for my sister, I walked out of the store with a phone number and active service. I eventually switched to Auto Refill with a credit card. When my sister passed away a few weeks ago, I cancelled the Auto Refill. It was very easy - one 5 minute phone call and no hassle at all, and I received a text that Auto Refill was cancelled. It also showed up on the phone and account right away.

Question

Where can I see the coverage map

Rookie, I guess you didn't think much of my response nor the two other responses that gave you links to the Straight Talk website.

Again, there is NO general coverage map as Straight Talk uses all four of the major carriers ...AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint.

Each phone model Straight Talk sells will use one of those networks. One model may use Verizon and another model may use AT&T.

It will depend on what phone (brand and model of phone) you use with Straight Talk on what the coverage map will look like.

Once you determine what phone you are going to use or purchase, that phone is already preassigned to use one of the four major carrier's towers or network. It will use that network for the life of the phone while it's on Straight Talk no matter where you travel in the U.S.

For example, if you choose a Straight Talk phone that uses Verizon towers, that phone will use Verizon for the life of the phone no matter where you travel in the U.S.

The coverage map for Verizon native coverage look like this (copy-and-paste);

http://vzwmap.verizonwireless.com/dotcom/coveragelocator/Default.aspx?requesttype=NEWREQUEST?requesttype=newsearch&coveragetype=prepay

It will be all of the area shaded in purple where you will have actually both voice and 3G data coverage.

However, if you choose a Straight Talk phone that uses AT&T, for instance, the coverage map will look different.

Again, an approximate summary for Straight Talk coverage (all four networks) can be found on this one page and originally came from the Straight Talk website ...these are Straight Talk maps !!!:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DClNAYFn7F0/UW2SPTyj4SI/AAAAAAAAF-M/UQz5QVvwBR0/s1600/StraightTalk.jpeg

The four maps correspond to this:

GSM-T = T-mobile
GSM-A = AT&T
CDMA-S = Sprint
CDMA-V = Verizon

I apologize if this is not helpful but "it is the way it is" if you want a coverage map for Straight Talk service. Straight Talk is a MVNO (meaning they buy bulk service from major carriers to resell) so they do not own their own towers. They use the towers of the four major carriers. Therefore, for practical purposes, you actually have four coverage maps to look at and what one you ultimately use will depend on what phone you choose to use on Straight Talk.

I know this is a really weird and long URL but it will take you to the exact page. All you need to do is just type in your zip code in the box on the left:

http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home/h/coverage/servicearea/!ut/p/b1/hc7JCsJADIDhJ7JJ2lniUTp2s1atgnYuUkWk2OUi-vqO4EVBzS3w5SdgofJJoA6kZAE7sH19a871tRn6un3uVu03M6PLDJEX4VJhWqowM6uUMCYHKgcMZvNgNUn8UhFjuszjyFAeIOt_9xnY5tB592PnoceMHJAU7CJKyDFswb4HkGJyAcOSoqmPqF_g1wMfINHSgSRcx7rAReS_AH6ZCUKRDN0JOtvypUlHDzJtjWc!/dl4/d5/L2dBISEvZ0FBIS9nQSEh/?uri=nm%3Aoid%3AZ6_D0JM3QAH2BMI90IBBM505330O5

Here are the four maps that will give you a rough idea of each network Straight Talk uses (copy-and-paste):

http://www.howardforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=73733&d=1317514556

GSM-T = T-mobile
GSM-A = AT&T
CDMA-S = Sprint
CDMA-V = Verizon

However, those maps may not be as up-to-date as if you went to the individual carrier's website and used their interactive maps.

Remember, CDMA or Verizon and Sprint will provide service only in their native coverage areas ...in other words, no roaming. GSM or AT&T and T-Mobile have very limited roaming when using Straight Talk.

With either plan it's active for 30 days (not monthly) from the day you activate. And it's good for the 30 days as long as you have 'usage' left on your phone.

With the $30 plan you have 1000mins/1000texts and if you run out of one you still have the other, your phone remains active. Your service and telephone number are safe so long as you have usage. If you run out of both minutes and texts you'll lose your number if you don't get a new plan activated within 72hours.

With the $45 plan your service is safe the full 30 days, no limits on minutes or texts.

You have to renew your minutes every 30 days or it won't work. Minutes don't roll over. The $45 unlimited plan is good for 30 days. The $30 plan is good for 30 days, but if you use up your 1,000 minutes or texts, you may have to refill your minutes before the 30 days is up.
