It will work as a router. You may connect via WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n) or one of the four Gigabit Ethernet ports. It supports simultaneous use of a primary WiFi network and a guest WiFi network (guest access is optional).

I thought this works as a router too, but I guess we still need to get a router for upstairs because my daughters computer loses the connection constantly since we hooked up the surfboard. My connection (on same floor as surfboard) works fine BUT I do believe the overall "speed" is much slower than before when we had connection with rented modem from Charter. Anyone else have these two issues - ?

It's a modem AND a router, in one unit, a lot less used up space, and fewer cables needed. It takes up about 2"wide by 7" long, a very small footprint.

Question

Will this work with a computer that is wired and a tv that has a wireless connection?

There is a free internet connection available to me but I am 3 floors up and connection is too sporadic to count on. Others with same problem have gotten routers but I neglected to ask what kind they got. Although I believe I did see one wired router.

If you have a cable connection, this will connect it to the internet and provide Wi-Fi to the TV. At more cost from the cable company of course. They will have to "flip the switch".

Yes, it can be hooked up strictly with cables. This has a wireless router as a main component of the device. You can certainly buy it and just use it as a modem, but you'll be spending extra money.

The SB5101 modem you have is old DOCSIS 2.0 technology. It's what I just replaced with this new modem. For the level of cable service I have, DOCSIS 3.0 is recommended and the new modem is about 50 percent faster. Why keep your old modem if a new one is better and also includes WiFi? Around here, you can't even give away Motorola Surfboard SB5101 modems.
