It will work as a router. You may connect via WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n) or one of the four Gigabit Ethernet ports. It supports simultaneous use of a primary WiFi network and a guest WiFi network (guest access is optional).

I thought this works as a router too, but I guess we still need to get a router for upstairs because my daughters computer loses the connection constantly since we hooked up the surfboard. My connection (on same floor as surfboard) works fine BUT I do believe the overall "speed" is much slower than before when we had connection with rented modem from Charter. Anyone else have these two issues - ?

It's a modem AND a router, in one unit, a lot less used up space, and fewer cables needed. It takes up about 2"wide by 7" long, a very small footprint.

Nope this is for cable internet not DSL service. Use's coaxial input. Modem's that are for DSL are labeled and sold as such 'DSL modem'.
In the description it explains cable modem gateway which will not work with any DSL ISP's.

Question

Will this work with a computer that is wired and a tv that has a wireless connection?

There is a free internet connection available to me but I am 3 floors up and connection is too sporadic to count on. Others with same problem have gotten routers but I neglected to ask what kind they got. Although I believe I did see one wired router.

If you have a cable connection, this will connect it to the internet and provide Wi-Fi to the TV. At more cost from the cable company of course. They will have to "flip the switch".

It is more likely that your upload/download rates will be limited by your ISP than by this modem. It has a theoretical data transfer rate of 343 Mbps if all 8 channels are utilized. If a single channel is utilized, the theoretical data transfer rate is 43 Mbps.

I get 133mbps wireless, according to my laptop. However, according to a speed test web site, I get 43mbps, directly plugging in to the modem. Cox said I should get at least 21mbps, so either way, I'm happy. On wireless, according to that website mentioned, I get 21mbps.
Those are all download speeds. All I can say is that it's the fastest thing I've ever owned.

Yes. I have cable internet, and cable phone, or voip as they refer to it. All work great. With my ethernet cable plugged into my laptop instead of using my wireless, it says I am getting 1gbps. Then again, I have the fastest internet that Cox offers, so the speeds of others may vary depending on what service they have. My "voip" internet phone service plugs directly into this modem/router, and I can't tell the difference from the old fashioned home phone service. I'm using Phone.com as my voip phone service.
I run 2 pc's, the voip phone, and watch Netflix movies, all thru this modem/router, and also a Clickfree wireless backup unit. All work great. I highly recommend this modem/router.

Question

Is this N, G, & B compatible? What is the range of the signal?

It is 802.11 a/b/g/n compatible.

Range is tricky to predict. It depends heavily on the location of the modem, the location of the device, objects or walls between them, and levels of electromagnetic interference (the most common source of EMI are microwave ovens).

Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest a range much greater than that of average wireless access points. Perhaps as much as double.

It's A,G,B backwards compatible, according to the modem documentation. It is an "N" modem gateway, the latest technology at Docsis 3.0, up to 8 times faster than Docsis 2.0, of course you'd have to have Docsis 3.0 service from your internet service provider to get the higher speeds, also according to the documention that came with the unit. It is backwards compatible with Docsis 1 and 2.0, according to the documentation. I am very impressed with it.
It is both modem AND router.
Can't help on distance measurements, but I'm sure the info is available on the Motorola website.
