aloha - a standard 'network' cable is all that is needed. CAT5e or CAT6, either one should work. We used a 50ft ethernet cable from our router (in a back room), through the dining room, and into our family room just to play....this was before we got the wireless USB piece, lol.

aloha - you will NOT need an ethernet cable, wireless internet access is all that is needed to play on Live. Now IF by chance the wireless connection cuts in and out a lot - called 'lag time' - during game playing, then I would suggest a direct connection via the ethernet cable, if it's not running down the middle of the living room, haa.

You can either connect an Xbox to a router, or if the router is wireless, you can purchase a wireless adapter for 1st Gen Xbox. 2nd Gen 'Xbox 360 S' (December 2010 to present) have built in wireless adapters.

If his system isn't wireless, he will need Ethernet cord. We have wireless internet but my son has to use cord to play his Xbox. It is my understanding that you can upgrade the system or buy a new wireless one, but that is going to cost a lot more than a cord.

As far as I know all he needs to play online is a gold membership and a connection to the internet, whether this be wireless or through an ethernet cable. The problem is whether or not he has a wireless card for his xbox. I know on my version you have to buy a wireless card, which runs around $100 bucks and wireless internet. If he has the card he doesn't need the cable, but if he doesn't have the card then he does need the cable, which could be connected into his wireless router. (For new versions of the xbox with internal memory, I don't know if you need to buy the wireless card or not.)

If he has the Wireless Internet adapter and can connect to the internet wirelessly- no. Otherwise he needs a Cat 5 or 6 patch cable connecting the router to the Xbox.

If he has wireless internet (if he currently has Xbox Live silver or a trial gold membership - he is connected) and can connect the Xbox to it wirelessly, all he has to do is activate the card.

aloha - I believe they sell a 'Family Membership Pack' that allows up to 5 or 6 (?) different User ID's, or Gamer Tags - but it's a little more money.
Seperate family accounts could be better, ie- maybe 1 person only plays during the summertime, I'd buy a 3 month membership for that gamer. Another person may play every other day year round, I'd get the 1 year membership for them. Just depends on your household Xbox360 gaming use.

No, you dont. You sign in with only one membership and the rest of the family, if they want to play the same game at the same time, can sign in as guests. Although i hear some games dont let you sign in as guests but its not usually a problem. It has never happened to me or my husband.
If You arent talking about playing the same game at the same time than theres even less of an issue because everyone just uses the same account.

Yes you can. But every time you change consoles you must download your profile to the new console, which will take a few minutes depending on how many games you have played because it has to load all of your achievement points and stuff. To go back to the first console and play, you will then be required to download the profile again. Basically, you can use it on as many different consoles as you want but only one at a time.

aloha - I've tested this and YES, once you are an Xbox Live subscriber you can type in your User ID on any Xbox 360, sign in to Live, and start playing. (of course that Xbox360 must have internet connection too) Your gaming points, etc. will follow your User ID / Gamer Tag name. You can even do this in split-screen mode like on Black Ops COD... two different Live ID's playing on one Xbox 360 at the same time - and both ID's collecting their points within the game. When you get back to your Xbox360 and log in, you'll have all your points, etc. as if you were right there the whole time.

We buy them ahead of time and normally wait until the current membership expires before we enter a new code. But we might have added a new membership code while still active on one occasion and, if we remember correctly, it just extended the current membership.

The way I have done this is activated one card at a time. The cards do not expire.

You can enter both in at one time and it extends your membership, the same goes for any length (2 day ones, 1 month, 3 months, etc.) Sometimes you will get sample one in games and can extend your membership a couple days too. So it is best to buy a couple while they are on sale because you can extend your membership out for the two years.

aloha - this is a good question, I almost purchased another Gold Live membership to test this. But then another gamer told me that because of each unique number on the cards, it'll ADD to your one current account / Gamer Tag ID.
So you should get 2 years of membership life using 2 seperate Gold Live cards towards the same account.

You can use one to activate your account or renew it. You can activate another card, but you can only have two cards active at the same time.
