The NETALK DUO Does NOT require a computer at all! just plug it in to an ethernet port on your modem or router and your good to go.If you want to plug it in to your computer you can do that also it has a usb port on it for connecting to your computer. That is why it is called the DUO because you can use it two ways. Much better than the Majicjack

answer 10
That is correct. However you DO need a "real" phone if you aren't going to use a computer. For instance a cordless or corded one. Also, you need to use the internet so you either need to plug it into the router (be sure it's one that works well with NetTalk- see my review of the product) OR computer in order to have it work. The computer does not have to be on if you are running it through the router. You can go online at nettalk . com and check out their quick start guide via PDF that's also included with the DUO. It will show you how it all works before you purchase it.

You need to logon to a computer to set up your account with NetTALK, but your phone will function so long as you have

1.) A strong enough internet connection
2.) Power for the NetTalk
3.) Power for your router/modem

I bought it because I don't want to leave my computer on all the time to make calls.

I have a Belkin model F9K1002 v1 with firmware F9K1002_WW_1.00.08. I have a VPN line with (per SpeedTest) of 1.8 Meg.
The phone works very well both in and out calls but I do loose a few words if I try to stream video on the PC during calls. Lead a simple life of only one thing at a time and all is well.

When I enabled the 5060 port on the firewall, it eliminated the one-way talk issue I was originally having. I have a Belkin Playmax 600. I did not load the DUO in the DMZ to prevent the possibility of hackers. Just follow the instructions under the trouble shooting for a Belkin router at the DUO website and it worked for me.

You need access to a computer to set up the device via the nettalk web site and select your phone number, then the computer is no longer needed. The device needs at least 1.5 meg high speed line to make and get calls. Cable modem or VPN line at a min.

If you are talking about ones that are wired into your wall, yes, you can use the netalk to supply the signal for all three. You'll just have to know how to connect all of your phone lines together at the junction box for your phone lines. Or you can do what I did...buy one of the cordless phone sets (usually have 3 or more handsets) that only require you to have the base plugged into the phone line and the other phones use the signal coming from the one base.

You can connect a cordless phone base station which has remote receivers throughout the house with no problem. You can use the duo to power your internal phone lines within the home but you have to know how to disconnect the phone line (coming into the house) from your current landline provider. Be careful bc the lines from the street have low voltage and they can fry the duo. I dont know how the procedure works but Ive read it on their forums.

You do get basic Caller ID with the DUO. My phone just shows the number of the caller and when I call out it shows my DUO number and the city/state where the number is in. I dont think there's an option to where it shows your name though...not yet at least.

no, they don't have it set up to port numbers. They have preselected numbers for different areas. They didn't have any for my state!

No. They ask you where you live and then give you a list of local Area Codes that are available. When you pick your area code they assign the number. I think that transferring your telephone number is called "porting" your number, FWIW.

Number portability (keeping same number) isn't available yet. One option is to transfer the number you want to keep to a cell phone or forward incoming calls to the NetTalk line. If you analyze your incoming phone calls I suspect you'll find 90% of calls come from a small number of people, mostly friends and family who can easily make the switch.

No, not at this time. I was wondering the same thing when I bought mine. If you go to their website though, it is a goal of theirs to have this as an option in the near future. I figured it was worth the switch to save so much money and I was right...I love mine.

No, you may not at this time. I have tried to find out my self, and after I purchased the product they did not provide me with an option to port over my existing number. They may in the future!
