If you don't want to record, you can hook it up to your TV (not if you have co-axial plugs on your tv) and just play a dvd or video. But the customer service is non-existent, and hook up is confusing.

I hooked my television directly to my vhs/dvd combo player without any problems. You only need the cable to hook-up the television to the player and I believe the cable came with the player; if not they are inexpensive or you may have some laying around like we always seem to...

You can hook this to your TV, without any additional equipment, and use it to watch VHS or DVD videos. You can also record non-copy-protected DVDs to VHS.

If you want to record a television program to VHS, you would need a cable or satellite box.

No. You need cable or satellite service to record. And, this unit has no co-axial plugs on it. Someone who bought an rf modulator to interface it with the cable, said he couldn't get it to work. Don't buy this.

I cannot answer your question but someone on here gave you some incorrect information, they do still make the old type DVD/VCR's that connect to regular cable which I have, but they are much more expensive. They probabley have one on here for about $200 + but now cable in Memphis is going to all digital, and I will not be able to get any stations thanks to Comcast, Hope this helps you

No. But then I don't know of any similar products in this price range that do. If you are looking for one with a built in tuner, you are going to have a long and expensive search. They just don't make them much anymore. As far as I know, they stopped right around the time they stopped making VHS. :(

No, it doesn't.

The model shown in the link below does have tuners built in.

The DVR670 is being discontinued, so you should be able to find some good prices on it.

Question

Does this combo play both tapes and dvds?

More interested in playback of both tapes and dvds, possibly recording of tapes into dvds but that's a plus, NOT a necessity. Will be using many times each week.

This unit has no co-axial cable plugs. If your cable or satellite provider uses co-axial cable, you would have to buy a kit for $30 at Radio Shack to interface with co-axial cable. This product is a nightmare. I would not recommend.

This model comes with the composite video and audio cables (yellow/red/white). This will give you your basic hook up. There are additional connections available, shown in the image below.

Not knowing your specific setup, I can't advise on what cables would be necessary.

Unfortunately, no this unit will only allow you to watch a dvd; however Toshiba does offer this alternative that will allow you to record:
Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo
Double-check to be certain that it offers all you are looking for, now I wish I had purchased this more expensive one...

The DVD on this model is a player only, so you can't record a DVD.

The Toshiba DVR620 will record both VHS and DVD. Walmart doesn't carry this model, but you can find it if you Google the model number.

Question

Cable & connections

My comcast cable box has only 2 terminals: "cable in" and "out to TV", plus selection of channel 3 or 4. My old, working TV has only 3 terminals: red ["audio right"], white ["audio left"], and yellow ["video input"]; plus "antenna in". Since this unit has no tuner, how can I record a TV program to a VCR tape? [I assume I cannot watch one show while recording another.] If so, how do I connect everything? Thank you.

This unit has no co-axial cable plugs. You will have to buy a $30 converter kit from Radio Shack to connect it with a co-axial cable. I do not think you can record one program while watching another. Without buying anything extra, you can only plug this into your tv and watch a DVD or video. No recording. By the way, Toshiba customer service is non-existent. You will NEVER get through to a human.

With your current cable box, the only way to record TV programming is with a VCR with a tuner built in. While this model doesn't have tuners, the Toshiba DVR670 does have tuners.

Probably the easiest and cheapest solution is to get a cable box from Comcast with composite video outputs. That would allow you to record, and send the program to your TV using the red/white/yellow connections.

I think any newer tv would accept this DVD/VHS player.
I didn't realize it when I moved but my DVD player that was about 5 years old, would not hook up to my new TV so research it or go to the store to be sure or save all the paperwork/recepts for a return.

In order to record TV programs, you will connect this to a cable or satellite box to receive the program. There is no tuner built in, so if you use an antenna for your programming, this won't work for you.

Of course regardless of how you get your TV programming, you can still use this to view VHS and DVDs.

The SD-V296 doesn't have tuners built in, so it doesn't have the RF connection for attaching to an antenna or cable feed.

Toshiba does offer a model that has the tuners, as well as DVD recording capability. It was recently discontinued, but you can still find them. Just search for Toshiba DVR670.
