Questions & Answers for Toshiba Toshiba DR430 DVD Recorder

Question

Can I use the Toshiba DR430 DVD Recorder, my laptop computer, and HDMI cable to make a DVD that may be played without a power point program?

My goal is to record and play on a TV or computer data that I make via my power point program, without any special program such as Power Point or Power Point Viewer. Some of my friends and relatives have one of those programs, some don’t. I can already play my power point data on my TV via my Toshiba Laptop and an HDMI or computer monitor cable. I have audio and video without any lost quality. I am hoping to make a recording of that data via the Toshiba DR430 DVD Recorder and send it to a relative or friend to play like any audio and video CD. Your response will be very helpful.

The DR430 doesn't have an HDMI input (I wish it did) but if you can use RCA video/audio cables, S-video, or a DV cable (what digital camcorders and some digital cameras use) as the output from your laptop then yes you can. If you just have HDMI or a monitor output on your laptop you will need to get an adapter that will convert those signal types to either the RCA type video/audio cables, S-video, or DV cable that the DR430 has for inputs.

I'm not familiar any program that would allow you to do that.

One option you might want to consider is to save the PPT presentation as JPEGs, then burn those to a disc for viewing in a DVD player that will display JPEGs. Of course you would have no audio or animations with that work-around.

If you google "computer video capture" there are options for capturing video on your laptop. It's possible you could capture the PPT presentation as you run it and save as a video.

Either option would allow you to use the internal CD/DVD burner in the computer to burn the DVD.

Your TV is a HD unit so it likely has all the plugs necessary to connect this unit including an HDMI connection. I don't know what that other unit is but if it's a DVR, or for all that matters, any other unit such as a blue ray, you can connect the DVR, the DVD recorder and the TV in series, in that order. Your TV likely has several inputs for each machine to be pluged in separately so it can be used without turning all theother units on. Go to your TV input menu and/or look on the back or side iof your tv to see them.
What this machine DOES NOT have is a coaxial cable connection. Use the 3 RCA plugs to connect the cable/satilite box to this unit. Also connect your "box" directly to the tv with a coaxial cable or HDMI cable if your box has a HDMI output so you can see "box" transmissions without having this or anyother machine turned on.
Just a FYI, in my experience, HDMI cables will not support closed caption transmisions from any unit, if that's a concern, but they are much clearer.
Have fun!

Question

Ideal Quality Setting for VHS to DVD?

Would LP mode be a decent recording mode for analog camcorder/VHS to DVD? And does the USB allow you to transfer the raw video file(s) so they can be imported into PC video apps without having to first burn to DVD?

In general, use the fastest speed that you can use and still get the amount of time on it to complete your recording. If the VCR tape is recorded at a slow speed recording to A DVD is not going to get good results not matter what speed you use on the DVD.
NO IDEA ON THE PC QUESTION.

LP mode will work fine for the transfer of your VHS videos.

The USB port is only used for playing back either MP3 audio or JPEG photo files. It will not play back video files.

The DR570 has built in tuners, giving you the option of connecting it to an antenna or cable TV, while the DR430 does not.

All other features are the same.

I've tried a number of JVC, TDK, Sony, and Memorex, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RW CPRM and never ran across a kind it wouldn't record on. I was told that +R and +RW won't play in some DVD players, but I haven't tried it.

If you have a VHS player to play the VHS tapes to send the signal to be recorded, and the VHS tapes are not copy protected, then yes, it will record your video to DVD.

You can then play the DVD back in any DVD player.

Question

What CPRM Discs can I buy?

To record most things from cable it requires DVD-RW CPRM-compatible discs. I cannot find them _ANYWHERE_ online except in Japan, and they won't ship to USA.
What are some brands and model numbers of blank discs that are CPRM compatible?

I used DVD-RW and they work fine. They are are available on line from many places with no trouble. I purchased from Nuwegg.com but I bet you can find them on the Walmart site too. Nothing special they don't even have to be rewrite if you don't want. Something to be aware of though, with this and other Toshiba recorders I have found they delete the title but the not the space, so you never get it back.
Be sure you have connected properly too.
