Your TV is a HD unit so it likely has all the plugs necessary to connect this unit including an HDMI connection. I don't know what that other unit is but if it's a DVR, or for all that matters, any other unit such as a blue ray, you can connect the DVR, the DVD recorder and the TV in series, in that order. Your TV likely has several inputs for each machine to be pluged in separately so it can be used without turning all theother units on. Go to your TV input menu and/or look on the back or side iof your tv to see them.
What this machine DOES NOT have is a coaxial cable connection. Use the 3 RCA plugs to connect the cable/satilite box to this unit. Also connect your "box" directly to the tv with a coaxial cable or HDMI cable if your box has a HDMI output so you can see "box" transmissions without having this or anyother machine turned on.
Just a FYI, in my experience, HDMI cables will not support closed caption transmisions from any unit, if that's a concern, but they are much clearer.
Have fun!

The DR430 has Composite Video and S-Video inputs, so if your Fios box has one of those outputs, you can record programs.

Be aware that content owners have the option of restricting copying of their programs, so you may not be able to record some programs.

If you mean watching the same program/show as you're recording, then YES. If you mean watching a different program/show than the one you're recording, it depends. Most tvs now have multiple inputs. You can switch over to a different input.

If I understand the question correctly, you're asking if you can watch a program as you're recording it to the DVD. You can view a program while recording it.

If I misunderstood the question, please re-post it with more detail.

Yes, you can use the DR430 to record your video to DVD.

According to Sony's website, the camera comes with a cable for Composite video out, and you can use that.

Also there is an optional S-Video cable available from Sony that would allow you to output S-Video to the recorder.

If you're recording any channels at all, you have the connections set up correctly.

I suspect the problem you're having recording specific channels is the result of copy protection. If they choose, content owners can copy protect their programs to prevent copies from being made. Usually you'll find this on premium channels, but any program can potentially be copy protected.

Question

If you program it to record TV broadcasts through a cable box, does the TV need to be on?

Answers to similar questions emphasize that the "source" needs to be on for the recording feature to work. I'm trying to clarify whether the "source" referred to is the TV or the cable box. Don't really want to leave the TV on so I can record programs while not at home. Thanks!

The inputs are standard RCA phono plug Audio/Video jacks, and S-Video input for better picture. The outputs are the same plus HMDI for HDTVs, and RGB outputs for projection TVs. While it may record in Video or S-Video, the output does upgrade the signal to 1080p HDMI for HDTVs, but I haven't used the HDMI output yet. It doesn't have an internal TV tuner, which you shouldn't need with a cable/satellite box.

You can use the HDMI cable to connect the player to your TV so you can watch your DVDs.

To record TV, you will have to have an external source such as a cable box or satellite receiver. There is no tuner built into the player.

The Toshiba D-R570 recorder has the built-in digital tuners. While it was discontinued recently, you can still Google it to find it on-line. Walmart isn't selling this model.
