Is an external tv tuner, cable box or satellite tv receiver required for this recorder with this tv?
the tv i just bought from you is an Emerson 39" Class LCD 1080p 60Hz HDTV, LC391EM3
now i want to buy a toshiba DR430 DVD Recorder, so i can use the HDMI jack.
with this new digital tv, is the need for an external tv tuner, cable box or satellite tv receiver required or NOT required in order to record television programs?

on Toshiba DR430 DVD Recorder
The inputs are standard RCA phono plug Audio/Video jacks, and S-Video input for better picture. The outputs are the same plus HMDI for HDTVs, and RGB outputs for projection TVs. While it may record in Video or S-Video, the output does upgrade the signal to 1080p HDMI for HDTVs, but I haven't used the HDMI output yet. It doesn't have an internal TV tuner, which you shouldn't need with a cable/satellite box.

You can use the HDMI cable to connect the player to your TV so you can watch your DVDs.
To record TV, you will have to have an external source such as a cable box or satellite receiver. There is no tuner built into the player.
The Toshiba D-R570 recorder has the built-in digital tuners. While it was discontinued recently, you can still Google it to find it on-line. Walmart isn't selling this model.
