The designation "N" means North as in the region of the country you live in, " S" means South. The batteries have a different amount of "CCA", Cold Cranking Amps, according to the climate you live in. The colder the climate, the more Amps. In the North, the Maxx35N has 640 CCA, cold cranking amps, the Maxx 35S has 500 CCA, since it would not be exposed to temperatures below freezing temperatures on a regular basis, ie during Winters.
Here is a hint I learned from Car Talk Radio.... Contrary to popular belief, when you are in a frozen environment, in unusually cold temperatures, turn on your headlights, or turn the key to RUN position, without trying to start. Then turn off for 10 to 20 seconds and then try to start the engine. This will "excite" the electrons in the battery and get the juice flowing. You might have to hold the key in start position, and let it crank for longer than usual, but it worked for me.
N (north) is designed for cooler climates, and S (south) for warmer climates.
