Questions & Answers for Prestone Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant

Question

I have a Buick Car that requires Dex-Cool Antifreeze. I have one gallon of Prestone Dex-Cool and one gallon of Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze.

By mixing these two antifreezes will I get the same quality service or should I go and buy another gallon of Dex-Cool type of Antifreeze?

Thanks, Jesse

a new class of inhibitors, called organic acids. Examples of U.S. brands with these organic acids: Havoline Dex-Cool and Prestone Extended Life, both recommended for five years or 150,000 miles.

Stick with the Dex-Cool. I put a one type fits all (Prestone) anti-freeze in my Cadillac and within an hour a hose blew off. It didn't overheat or anything, but the bypass hose popped off. I put the hose back and replaced the Prestone universal with Prestone Dex-Cool and have never had another problem.

One note if your GM vehicle recommends an additive use it. It is an acid neutralizer and stop leak and it really works. I don't have the part number, but it is in pill form and contains Sal Soda, Turmeric and walnut shell powder--believe it or not--and it is really is good stuff. My Cadillac owners manual stipulates that it be used or the warranty is voided. They may not recommend it for all GM vehicles. It seems that they use it for engines that have aluminum and iron combinations.

I would/and have replaced my dexcool. I used 2 gallons of new dexcool, and I have a gallon of universal for the occasional top-off. By the way my origional dexcool lasted 10 yrs! Good luck, Donnie

I am having the leaking intake issues on a Chevy van. Don't know if I didn't replace the Dexcool in time or mixed with the extended and caused the problem. I am nursing it along and will replace with DEX-Cool when the gaskets are replaced. Why chance it. Change ALL fluids on time with the correct type and don't worry about it.

hello jesse i ran into this dexcol issue in febuary
since you can add prestone extended life to any color coolant, id use prestone extended life, i heard horror stories of dexcol eating at intake gaskets. i replaced my gaskest and flushed system, and only use green prestone extended life. so you will know for later since your question is a month old you probably already made a desision, but if you didnt already switch to green id do it as soon as u can do not wait 5 years as it breaks down much faster than dexcool states. goo luck i love my buicks

From FAQ section of Prestone Website:

"Some European automobile manufacturers request that a phosphate-free antifreeze be used in their vehicles. This issue is related to the extremely high mineral content of the water in Europe. If you were to mix an antifreeze that contained phosphates with the type of water they have in Europe, it may produce deposits that can settle in the cooling system and promote corrosion. However, in North America we do not have this type of water problem. Typical North American coolants have contained phosphates (which is part of the corrosion inhibitor package) for many years. Therefore, the question of phosphates is a non-issue here in North America. Prestone® Antifreeze/Coolant is completely safe for use in both foreign and domestic vehicles. For those consumers who would feel more comfortable using a phosphate-free antifreeze, our Prestone® LongLife® Premixed Antifreeze/Coolant and Prestone® Dex-Cool® Premixed LongLife® Antifreeze/ Coolant formula’s are phosphate, silicate, and borate free. These coolants use a special chemistry and technology that extends the life of the corrosion inhibitor package so that it lasts for five years or 240,000 kms (whichever comes first), and is safe for all cars and light trucks (old or new). Prestone® Dex-Cool® Premixed LongLife® Antifreeze/ Coolant has been approved by General Motors under their DEX-COOL® specifications and is compatible with other DEX-COOL® approved coolants. * DEX-COOL® is a registered trademark of General Motors Corporation."

if your vehicle is still under warranty, though, go to the stealer-ship and get the red fluid

Whatever fluid or part you are looking for your vehicle the manufacture has specs. Just make sure these products meet those specs. If your vehicle calls for say Dexron II then make sure you buy trans fluid that meets that spec. Many times a fluid say motor oil says it meets several manufactures specs.

No, this is not pre-diluted. Yes, you should add water to mix with this, not necessarily distilled water. Distilled water is typically used in servicing automotive batteries. Plain tap water is fine to mix with any coolant/antifreeze. Just make sure you know what ratio of water to anti freeze you are mixing. Typically 50% water to 50% antifreeze (50/50) is sufficient for 99.9% of vehicles in most any weather situation.
