Range is over 100 yards, have connected my laptop to mine at that distance at least. That was wireless N to N. You can set it to different frequency and wirelss a, g, as well. I have mine set on pure N. You can also disdable wireless and choice of broadcast or not broadcast network ID. I don't broadcast mine, if it can't be seen, less likely to be hacked.

I don't know about upstairs. I live in a smal town, but a number of wireless networks close, mainly the school's. I can say this, I tested mine, connected easily on my laptop at over 100 yards away from my house. I strongly suggest you set both your pc's firewalls and the firewall on the modem and use security options as well for this reason. As for speed, I apy for 50mbps service here. before buying this modem, I never got a speedtest rating above 24mbps, since installing this, speedtests range from 47 to 53mbps. The difference is amazing.

The reason I got this was that my old setup on the second floor no longer allowed consistent access to my laptop downstairs. No longer a problem; I get a stron signal.

If your modem is a "cable" modem, this will work. If it's a "dsl" modem, it will not. A cable modem has a coaxial connection , a DSL modem has a phone jack connector. This will NOT work on DSL such as ATT, Verizon, etc.

You should be able to go to their website, and see if it is an approved device. It is approved for Comcast.

You need a cable modem with a RJ-11 phone port built in which you can't buy you can but comcast will not activate it you will need to rent one from comcast or you can just get vonage which a phone adapter will just plug into a router then you can use any cable modem you buy.

Yes; It work with all major cable modem services. It is best to purchase your own. Don't let them talk you out of doing so. They try to scare you a little. By telling you. If you have problems with your own purchase modem. You will not get full support.

Yes, in modem settings you can turn wireless off and use it strictly as a "wired" access point just like a non wireless cable modem.
