No. The cartridges are specific to each of the slots and the printer will not accept a black cartridge in the color slot. If you want just black and white prints, just leave the empty color cartridge installed and in your printer menu under "preferences" chose black and white prints.

If you run out of any color ink the printer will protect itself and not print. With some ink in color cartridge, go to control panel. Choose devices and printers. Select Black Ink Only from dropdown.

answer 3
1) It can be a bit loud in a quiet environment, but only when using the "Scan" or "Copy" feature. I have found in my experience that the printing is rather quiet, and fairly quick.
2) The type of computer does not matter. Your Operating System (Vista) is the important aspect in this, and to answer the question, Yes it is. It is also compatible with Windows XP & Windows 7.

answer 6
I would say it is a little on the noisy side, but for the price it's well worth it. Even if it only lasts about a year, you have gotten your money's worth. I alway's buy the low priced printers because I go through alot of them. In the past I have had expensive printers that don't work as good as this one does. An all in one for 25 bucks. You can't beat that deal anywhere. And yes it is compatible with Windows Vista.
