I get my paper from Family Dollar for $2.00 for a hundred sheets. Because I use this for personal and not business I can use the cheapest paper I can find. If I had to type a resume or a business letter I would use more expensive paper.

No. The cartridges are specific to each of the slots and the printer will not accept a black cartridge in the color slot. If you want just black and white prints, just leave the empty color cartridge installed and in your printer menu under "preferences" chose black and white prints.

If you run out of any color ink the printer will protect itself and not print. With some ink in color cartridge, go to control panel. Choose devices and printers. Select Black Ink Only from dropdown.

You may actually choose where to save the photos. As you use the Scan option, it will give you the chance to direct where you save it. You may save it in your "My Pictures" folder or in a sub-folder located with "My pictures" (i.e. My Pictures - "Wedding Photos") Or in another location that you designate.
