Technically, Susan, if the 5-Star unit is not being constantly used and is in "standby," the charge will last up to five days. If you use the device to "track" the 5-Star user (great feature), the device may need to be charged more often.
However, 5-Star highly recommends charging your device each night or at bedtime.
Why? Because, if you live in an area prone to natural disasters (like earthquakes, tornadoes etc.), or in areas subject to power outages -- you may not have the opportunity to recharge the unit until your power comes back on. Remember, if the 5-Star device is not charged - it cannot help you during an emergency!!
That is why (and I fully agree), it is best (and safest) to charge your 5-Star device at least once each day or evening.
My 5-Star device came with a car charger when I purchased it several months ago directly from 5-Star (during a great sale).
If your 5-Star device did not come with a car charger, and your cell phone is charged by using a "USB" type charger, you MAY be able to use the same charger for your 5-Star device. Just be sure to check the "OUTPUT" power of your cell phone charger and compare that with the input power listed on the 5-Star device. (Or, just call 5-Star, they are very helpful people.)
Hope this helps!!
