I think what you plan on doing on the Kindle Fire will determine the degree of whether or not you need an anti-virus application installed. There are a few that are available in the Appstore such as Dr. Web and Webroot Mobile Security that can be installed for protection. I installed the Webroot security on my daughter's Kindle Fire simply because I'm familiar with their products and know that they are a trusted source. She shouldn't be doing too much on the device, but you just always want to take precautions when you feel they are necessary.

If they're available through Amazon.com for digital versions, yes. Either that or if you have a .pdf version or .txt version of the book you can e-mail it to the device.

Question

how long is the battery life? What's in the box?

answer 1
Battery life depends on what you're using, if you're streaming obviously the battery is going to go down quicker but average time is around 8 hours or so if you're using it continuously.

Included in the Box – Kindle Fire device, U.S. power adapter (supports 100-240V), and Quick Start Guide.

I can play on it for about 5-6 hours per day and that battery needs to be charged about the time I am ready for bed. I play games and surf the net a lot with mine. If you only used it as a reader a LOT longer.
What is in the box. The kindle and a charger that is it. The instructions manual that goes with it is built into the actual kindle.

Question

What type of keyboard does the kindle fire have and is it a full screen keyboard?

The onscreen keyboard pops up automatically when you touch a text input box. It is not full screen by default, not sure if you can expand it. It is a pretty decent keyboard. It allows you to toggle between alpha characters and symbols. Not every symbol is available (at least I couldn't find a couple so I had to change my wi-fi pre-shared key on my wireless router in order to use the wifi in my home. I use a password generator that comes up with some hard passwords. Could be a problem I suppose if you couldn't change router settings at your location, but most public places probably don't use unusual symbols anyway. Also, maybe you could copy symbols from somewhere and then paste as a work around. Again, it is a nice touch keyboard, it is just this one small problem I ran into. BTW, I have XL hands and still find the keyboard usable for web browsing, etc. There is an issue with text selection, the selection indicators are under your fingers where you cannot see how much text you have selected without peeking under your fingers. Getting back to your question, the keyboard by default takes up maybe 1/4 - 1/3 of the screen. I don't have it with me right now so I cannot check).

Not sure about from the fire itself, but you will be buying it from Amazon's online music store, so you can at least always play it there and download it from there also.

Do I need a password at these "hotspots" in order to use it? Or can I simply log in?

It depends on the 'hotspot'. Some require passwords but some do not.
The Fire will search for close hotspots and tell you if it is open or secure.

If you are in a public hotspot you should just be able to go to the network setting and log in without a password.
