It is removable metal. Gets relatively hot, but you do not need to remove it from the crockpot to eat your meal. I think each person has to use their own judgement in touching. I have taken it out right away using a napkin and not been burned. I like the fact that the insert and lid is dishwasher safe even though I find it so easy to clean anyway.

it is the kind that you just plug in for on/off.. and there's not a timer but when you go to eat your meal you unplug it as you will need to keep the pot in the base (it'll be hot) to eat your meal.. so there won't be a way to forget to unplug it! and LOVE the way they have the cord storage too!
