Question

GEL Battery or Not? Battery Tender?

I am trying to determine which "Battery Tender" or "Floater" product to buy and I cannot determine if this new battery is a GEL battery or not.

I can not determine if this battery is even a real "Deep Cycling" battery or not?

Any recommendations?

This battery is not a Gel Cell battery. It's a "flooded lead acid" battery. This battery type generally falls into two classes: "starting" and "deep cycle".

The difference between the two is the construction of the lead plates. The amount of amps that can be pulled is proportional to the surface area of those plates. On a starting battery, many holes are put into the plates to increase surface area (and cranking amps). A deep cycle battery has solid plates without holes.

When a lead acid battery discharges, lead sulfate collects on those plates. The deeper the discharge, the more lead sulfate. The solid plates in a deep cycle battery can handle a lot of that lead sulfate buildup and then shed it all off when recharged. When a starting battery does a deep discharge, the lead sulfate can plug up those holes permanently. That reduces its ability to take a charge and to provide high current, like starting an engine.

This battery, and any labeled Marine, RV, or Group 24, Group 27, or Group 29 are all the deep cycle type.

This is a Sealed Lead Acid battery. That means it is a wet cell battery, not a gel battery. You won't touch a gel battery for this price.
As far as I know, the only TRUE deep cycling batteries are 6V types, as used in golf carts or personal mobility devices. However, as far as this type of battery goes, it will handle repeated deep cyclings.
It has 122 Amp Hours of reserve power.

Its a flooded battery. This is closer to a dual-type battery, mix between starting and deep-cycle.

Product to buy to charge your battery is up to you.. The more you spend the better. Battery desulfating or "pulse" charger is best.

Looking at the spec sheet, which there is none, it's not possible at answer your question. Most manufactures will state Amp/hours for a 20hr period of discharge time. As the load/current is increased it will decrease the time it takes to reach 10.5 volts which is considered a dead battery. That is common sense; the more you drain it the faster is dies. What is important to know is how this affects the amp/hour rating. A battery that is discharge over a 2 hour period may have a rating of only 68 amp/hours. That same battery discharged over the normal/standard 20 hour period of time may have an amp/hour rating of 100. If left to discharge slowly over a 100 hour period of time it amp/hours may be 118. So when a manufacture states an amp/hour, they should also state the time period of discharge. Brand name batteries usally have a spec sheet list the various amp/hours versus the time period. Doing it that way gives the consumer something to compare when buying a battery.

Good morning. There is a $12 core fee charge when you buy a new battery if you do not bring in an old lead acid battery to exchange. If you bring in an old lead acid battery there is not a charge.

answer 2
There is a core charge on any Automotive or Marine battery. The good thing is, the old battery does not have to be the same type as the one you are buying. I bought the Group Size 29DC Marine battery at one WalMart store and payed the core charge. The next day I took an old dead riding mower battery to a different WalMart store, along with my receipt for the core charge, and they gave me back my core charge. I had to buy the Marine battery at a different WalMart because my local store didn't have the Marine battery I wanted.

The MAXX and Everstarts are lead-acid (standard) batteries. Using the gel setting will damage the battery and may also cause other damage as well.

answer 3
This is a lead-acid battery so you should use "standard". Be careful with speed charges since they usually do not regulate the voltage as the battery charges and you can cook out the acid inside. Best to use a trickle charge maintainer or a regulated charger which ramps up the voltage as the battery charges. Your speed charger may regulate however. Depends on the model.

does this have 115 AH?

Not Close!
It list 114 AH on the battery, but if you read the fine print is says @ 1 AH.

I very much doubt that it would have delivered 1 amp for 114 hours, but I did not have the time to run this test.

Instead, I ran the industry standard test at about 5% load. For 114 amp hours, this comes out to 5.7 amps. I cut them some slack and let it rest a few times and toward the end lowered the drain to 2.8 amps and then down to 1.8 amps. The whole test lasted 17 hours.

Final amp hour total was 71.73.

If you really need 115 AH, you will not be happy with this battery.

If you can find it at a local store, get the DieHard #27582, it is rated at 115 AH and they use industry standard rating methods.

Question

I just bought a Maxx EverStart 29DC Charging Question

I just bought the Maxx EverStart Marine battery 29DC. I have a charger that charges both Deep Cycle and Maintenance Free batteries... The labelling on the Maxx says it's both Deep Cycle AND Maintenance Free.. which setting should I use and does it make a difference in that I could damage the battery if I use the wrong setting? Thank you, Ed

While the battery says that it is maintenance free this is not a sealed lead acid battery, you do need to monitor the electrolyte levels. If the level is below the bottom of the plastic column in each cell, add sufficient distilled water (DO NOT USE TAP WATER) to bring the level up. Use the deep cycle setting on your charger.

Tap water will ruin your battery.

answer 2
If I am not mistaken, a sealed
( Maintenance-Free ) battery requires a slower charging rate than a vented battery; regardless of whether it is a deep-cycle or not.
However, if I were you, I'd call the store where you bought the battery and ask one of their automotive techs which setting you should use for the charger.

This Battery is a Maintenance Free Battery with Deep Cycle capabilities. This is not a true deep cycle battery. The Price tag makes this battery a good choice, I have three of them, One is 3 years old and is going strong like the two new ones I recenly purchased.

Use the deep cycle setting to fully charge the battery. The Maintenance free setting may not get it to 100%.

Question

Can I use this battery for solar power? If so, how many solar panel watts are needed to fully charge the battery?

This battery is stated by others to be manufactured by Johnson Controls(JC) and to be an AGM constructed battery. JC is a large and reputable manufacturer and AGM technology is (one of) the preferred ones for solar and other RE applications. If the above apply and you get a good charge controller/charger with the typical more sophisticated charging algorithms of RE systems, and do not let it overheat (RE chargers usually come with a battery temperature monitor), I would think it should serve you well. Even if I does wear out faster then the more expensive RE batteries on the market, since they cost 2.5X more, you may come out ahead. Since there is a Walmart near my house, I plan to use these with the solar system I install this spring for the above reasons. Solar installers always advise not to skimp on batteries, but with the stated specs this option looks like a winner to me, especially if you are installing a grid-tied with battery backup system where the batteries will be maintained at full charge most of the time with your chargers "trickle charge" cycle, and only deep-cycled at times the grid is down. I would think these also a good choice for off-grid applications, but you should probably get at least 4 for a 24V system and 8 for a 48V system for a typical home system (all depending on the amount of backup needed and the size of your array for charging - remember the number of cycles you get will be related to the depth of discharge, & for the 24V & 48V systems above you will get around 531 and 1062 VAHrs of power over a 20hr period respectively without exceeding the batteries specs without recharging). When the sun is shining you can add your PV output to that. You also lose power from inefficiencies in charging and power factor corrections for your systems use, so kWHrs is always less than VAap (the numbers above).
How many solar panels you need depends on the energy demands of your loads, but with full direct sun 6 X 250W panels (small for a home system) would probably recharge the above use in an hour-plus, allowing for losses in conversion and power factor correction. In a day, you'd have 3 hours to spare with optimal conditions.
Hope this helps.

answer 2
You would want the Deep Cycle version of this battery ( Group Size 29DC ). The wattage of your solar panel(s) just determine how long it will take to recharge a battery based on the level of discharge and total Ah rating of the battery, hours of direct and indirect sunlight available etc. As long as your panels are 12 Volt panels and receive good sunlight, they will recharge a 12V battery. However, the higher the wattage of your solar panel(s), the more quickly the battery will be recharged. Also remember that direct sunlight allows the panel(s) to produce higher power output than indirect or low sunlight conditions.
Hope this helps you out.

Good morning. I do not have any information on this and I cannot recommend you use the battery for anything other than what it is designed for. That battery,in a Marine fitment, is a deep cycle battery that is good for starting, trolling, and RV if that will help you.
