Questions & Answers for Everstart EverStart Group Size 24DC Marine Battery

Question

Will equalizing this battery void the 1 year warranty?

"Equalizing or conditioning batteries refers to a method of charging deep cycle, wet cell batteries which is intended to restore battery capacity, revive battery efficiency, and extend battery life. The process involves periodically applying a controlled overcharge cycle to batteries." Source http://www.boatersresourcecenter.com/equalize-batterie/

Acid is Heavier than Water and will settle to the bottom of the battery. Over charging the Battery causes it to Gas or Bubble, mixing the acid and water and "equalizing" it throughout the cell. In a car, the movement of the vehicle helps keep the battery mixed. Find a cheap charger and leave it on until the battery starts bubbling for several hours. A cheap charger has no voltage regulator and will eventually reach the 16 volts required to force it to bubble. A fast 40 amp charger will do the same thing but the battery will get Hot and may void the warranty if it shows signs of damage.

NO, these are Wet Cell Batteries and best for Deep Cycle or High Current applications. Gel Cell and Glass Mat Batteries don't tolerate Gassing like when Starting or Fast Charging. They are better suited to back up power supplies because the electrolyte is held in place and can't separate into heavier acid and lighter water, but it also can't tolerate bubbles or Gassing which can produce voids in Gel.

Question

Should I remove the vent caps when charging?

Good idea if the Battery was drained down and your charging at 10 amps or higher. I have these in my Golf Cart and although my Charger is 20 amps, the rate falls off so quickly that I don't bother to remove the caps. But that's only because the Batteries are nearly fully charged even after I use them. When charging for long periods at high amps check if the Battery is getting warm. If it is you may need a smaller charger. Long slow charging is better than fast quick charging. Always use distilled water.
