No access outside zipcode except via wifi

I'm reading & hearing with this phone there in no web access outside your activation zipcode unless you connect via wifi. Anyone finding this to be true? This is the deal breaker on whether I fork out this kind of $ for this phone or not.

The short answer is yes it works outside your area. I use it and I am all over. The odd thing is their customer service people are parrots and they don't have good info. I hear all kinds of stuff. Did I mention I pay $45 a month and my phone works. So who cares.

I bought my phone at 80303 (Boulder, CO). Bought it mainly because it is on Verizon. Took it to remote rural NE Iowa, zip code 50641. On a farm, real boonies, and with 3g was able to surf the web, get e-mail, dowload files and apps, take pix and send direct to Facebook...so, I've read that claim elsewhere and it's simply not true. This is a great advancement for pre-paid Android. Also, got lost looking for another farm 2 hours south of Des Moines. GPS worked flawless while car was moving, as did 3g, so was lost no more!

Does the phone have wi-fi calling?

answer 1
Okay, I'll try Skype ... I'm not trying to avoid being charged for minutes, but both my homes have poor cellular reception and wi-fi calling would solve my problem, but only if I can call any number without them having to have some wi-fi app installed.
answered 2 years, 5 months ago
By
Phoenixtoohot
answer 2
Google Voice...and use that in conjunction with Groove IP or Sipdroid. That should allow you to call any number without it adding to the amount you use with Straight Talk.

Google Voice on it's own will show as minutes used to Straight Talk, hence why you need one of two apps listed above.

Another option, although this one costs $3 per month is to use Skype. You will then be able to call any number. Of course, Skype to Skype calls are free.

The speaker phone works fine, I can hear fine and people can hear me when I use it. It also has talk to text and voice dial features that are very nice. I would caution, however, that my phone occasionally loses connection on the receiving end... I can hear them, they cannot hear me. I will be returning mine for a new one to see if it is just a bad egg.

Someone above said that the Precedent is TMobile--actually the Precedent is Sprint. The Proclaim is Verizon. And yes, you CAN port a Landline (someone above said you usually can't)--I ported my Landline to Straight Talk in 2 days (good time for a Landline, they take longer. But worth the wait for the number iIve had for 34 years!)

Sometimes, an old cell number can be transferred, but usually not a land-line.

Verizon towers seems to be the usual, but I assume any tower may be used, when roaming, regarding ST agreements.

It works great; don't hesitate; you won't regret it. I've had Blackberry, etc., and this is the best.

When you activate it, provide them with the zip code to your Home Town and they will assign a related number. The Proclaim runs on Verizon Towers with the similar Precedent running on T-Mobile.

If you currently have an unlimited service plan then you can just transfer that number and service to the new phone and use the rest of your time, but if you have the $30 all you need plan then you will need to purchase a new unlimited service plan before activating your number on the new phone.

When I activated my two new phones, we were able to keep our previous number. However, according the Straight Talk, this all depends on your previous carrier. Transfer took about 10 minutes per phone when I activated them. Very easy transfer in my opinion and could not be happier.

However, keep in mind that a carrier may not allow a transfer or be able to transfer a previous number for various reasons.

Yes, you can if you wanted to. Your current number must be an active number. Here are the steps to take.

1) Call your current provider and get your account and pin numbers. This includes Net10 and Tracfone services. These are required to port your number to Straight Talk.
2) Activate this phone on the Straight Talk website. Click Activate, then transfer number. Put the dot in Activate my Straight Talk Service with a number from another company. Be sure to use the exact same account information(name, address, etc).
3) You will need a service card for activation. This can be done at activation. This phone will only use the $45 Unlimited or the $60 International Unlimited.
4) After all activation steps have been completed you will usually have a full functioning phone within an hour or two 99% of the time
5) Enjoy your new Samsung Galaxy Proclaim

The "activation card" to which you may be referring is likely to be the card with the serial number. Free minutes do not come with the phone - and where would be the sense of activating it without the ability of using it?

The activation card is not the same as a TIME CARD. I agree it is rather misleading though, it should say it a bit clearer in my opinion. To be fair it does say in the big red box on the front "PURCHASE PHONE PLUS AN UNLIMITED SERVICE PLAN TO GET GET STARTED." I suppose we just tend to gloss over that part when we are excitedly buying the phone hehe :)
