Question

Does the phone have wi-fi calling?

answer 1
Okay, I'll try Skype ... I'm not trying to avoid being charged for minutes, but both my homes have poor cellular reception and wi-fi calling would solve my problem, but only if I can call any number without them having to have some wi-fi app installed.

answer 2
Google Voice...and use that in conjunction with Groove IP or Sipdroid. That should allow you to call any number without it adding to the amount you use with Straight Talk.

Google Voice on it's own will show as minutes used to Straight Talk, hence why you need one of two apps listed above.

Another option, although this one costs $3 per month is to use Skype. You will then be able to call any number. Of course, Skype to Skype calls are free.

The magic jack app i suggested does not require others to have the app .. i used it for about 2 weeks before activating my phone .. it worked great and i made a lot of free wifi calls to land lines and cell phones.

I checked those apps ... they all require the caller and the callee to have the specific app installed. It doesn't appear that any of the apps in Play Store offer true wifi calling to anyone .... at least I could not find one.

Unfortunately you cannot use it as a hot spot as that is all locked down and would violate your agreement with ST

Probably . . . for a little while . . . until they catch you - then it's bye-bye service - they will shut you down. No tethering is part of the agreement.

I have not seen an option in the menu settings to turn this phone into a hot spot. I do not know if there is an app that does that or not. I would assume Straight Talk would rather you not.

No. Tethering is NOT allowed by Straight Talk and is specifically addressed in their Service Agreement which can be found at www.straighttalk.com (Terms and Conditions link)

Yes. This Galaxy Proclaim uses Verizon.

Straight Talk also has the LG Optimus Zip, aka LG Enlighten, which also works on Verizon.

If you are looking for strictly Verizon phones from ST, look in the lower left corner of the box. You will see this code:

CDMA-V

That is the service type and the carrier.

Yes the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim works off Verizon. Since they don't offer the Samsung R355 anymore, I believe this is the only phone that Straighttalk has for Verizon.

As long as you don't go crazy with your use. I've read online that if you are extremely excessive with your data use that StraightTalk will disconnect you. That hasn't happened to me personally, but I did read it online.

Otterbox doesn't make a case for this phone that I could find, but there are plenty of hard cases and silicone cases that fit this phone. The phone will take any case that fits the Samsung Illusion (same phone, different name). I bought the case for my wife's Proclaim off of another online retailer that starts with an "A". :D

Question

.pdf files ???

Someone please for the life of me tell me how or which (I've tried most all of them) app to use or which phone setting to change so I can at least view .pdf files on my sd card. A .pdf is a very common file. My old Optimist Q had no problems at all. I was told this was an upgrade but if it is not configured to open a simple .pdf...well, that leaves a lot of room to doubt... also, can't even download the simple basic CNN news app on the Proclaim. Says it is "incompatable" but worked just fine on the Optimist Q.... Makes one wonder !!!

Question for you Zzuebe:

1) Have you rooted this device and running it on a custom rom?

If so, that might be why you are getting the error. I have the Proclaim and just installed Adobe Reader without any problems whatsoever.

If you have not rooted the phone and you are not running a custom rom, you may need to reset your phone. Backup what you can beforehand.

Go to Settings, Privacy and then tap Factory data reset. That seems like it might be the only way to restore your phone as something has messed up.

I tried all the free ones on Google play (even Adobe Reader) and no good... always get the same message "an error has occurred"... I don't think the phone can read .pdf's... Friend has the same problem !!! I don't think this is an upgrade to the Optimist Q (really a bit slower at times) but does have better coverage and "Flash Player" ... Oh well !!!

That would not be enough... the micro SD cards are very inexpensive, I installed 32GB myself... I believe 4GB would be enough for quite some time, but if you shoot pictures, or video, get the largest card you can afford.

I had the same problem with the LG Optimus, it drove me crazy!!! Always had low storage problems, I've not had that problem with this
Galaxy Proclaim so far, it's been very fast & it has a larger internal memory. The memory & the verzion network is why I got this phone
& so far it's made me very happy. I've only had it about 3 weeks, but
It's performed even better than I expected. Hope this helps you.

Question

Does anyone have a problem with battery getting very hot or camera freezing?

I just upgraded to this phone and the battery gets super hot, super fast, doing simple things like checking email. I have also had problems with camera freezing and had to power off to get out of picture taking mode. I'm going to exchange for a new one hoping it was just a glitch with the one I got. I was wondering if anyone else had these problems. Thanks!
