I believe this is SGH T-989 model. Samsung has 2 Galaxy S2 models. One is 1.5 GHz dual core processor and the other model is 1.2 GHZ Dual core processor. The 1.5 GHz model is known as SGH T 989 in T-Mobile and I 727 Skyrocket In AT&T. The item description says this has a 1.5 GHz Dual core processor.

Does this or any other phone used by the Wal-Mart plan accommodate tethering or preferably mobile hot spot hosting?

I hate to say this but it's best to contact the WalMart Family plan directly to ask this question. Apparently the answers are all over the map. I was almost past the 14 day return limit when I was trying to activate their phone/plan and found out they didn't support tethering. The rep I spoke to said WalMart FP did not support tethering on any phone but others have written in saying they do. I was trying to activate on the Galaxy SII. Others have said you can tether by rooting the phone but that has it's own risks.

You can install an app (PDA.net) that will allow you to tether on an android phone. Search for the App in your phone's market or store.

I have no doubt what you say, hours ago, Tishdee05. Walmart Family Mobile needs to educate their tech support. I just called them to confirm and ask if any smart or android phones support tethering and I was assured tethering is not supported under Family Mobile plans. More award winning support from our friends at Walmart.

Well I already have a T-mobile Comet which has hotspot and tether capability. I have Family Mobile as well. I use the hotspot or tether while on laptop or desktop it is slow as it is android froyo but still faster than dialup with firefox. So I am assuming if it is hotspot capable or tethering capable it should work.

I beg to differ with JTChandler. I purchased this phone and plan and was just short of completing the activation when I ask the setup agent how I would perform the tethering. She researched and inquired from others and informed me that the Walmart Family plans did not support tethering and there was no way I was going to do it with this phone. I cancelled the activation and returned the phone. My research discovered that some prepaid plans support tethering, some do not. TMobile and Virgin do, Straight Talk and Walmart Family DO NOT.

I have heard there is a way to tether if the phone is capable using some sort of "end run" such as an app or "rooting" the phone.

Yes. Keep in mind the data limits, 250MB a month at 3G speeds unless you purchase a speedboost pack. You can still use it for internet after that, but it slows down considerably. If you are thinking of hosting your home network on it there are a lot of better options, but if you just want to use it occasionally to connect another portable device it should work okay.

Forgot to mention that the sim card does not come with the phone. You have to either:

1) If you have a t mobile sim, have Walmart call and switch you to the plan you want (easiest way).

2) Go to Walmart and ask for the to T Mobile sim cards. Either the $30.00 plan or the Family Plan will work for this phone. (trust me)

3) Once you do step two, you could have Walmart set everything up (easiest) OR you could go home and DIY. If you DIY make sure you have at least, an hour time block just to be safe. As I stated before, T Mobile CS can be hit or miss.

Yes! I had a pay as you go plan and was able to painlessly keep my number and change my plan to $30.00 100 minutes unlimited text and web. So, if you are not already with T Mobile you shouldn't have any problems. If you do, just be persistent and patient. Depending on who you get, T Mobile is hit & miss with customer service.

I hope this helps!

it will work with Walmart, T-mobile, and AT&T and any small carriers that use their networks. It will not work with Sprint or Verizon. There is an unlocked version sold by Walmart for a bit more that should work with any carrier.

The version sold by Walmart is for activation on either T-mobile or Walmart Family Mobile (which use the same network). This means it is set up to use GSM rather than CDMA technology, which is what Boost mobile and most other carriers use. It should also work on ATT, but other than that probably not.

It's a SGII - no difference. Works perfectly with the TMo SIM card and TMo service. I was able to unlock my phone and can use it on any GMS carrier in the world. The data speed puts AT&T in the dust!

Great Question. First... this phone does run those apps. It fully supports the Google Play Store. This is what consumers should know before they buy some low end tablets. If the description does not specifically say "Android Market" or "Play Store" then you are getting a third party app store and therefore apps will be less available.
