Both are great and have been tested under fire by the police and military for many years. Colt has the historic name, battle tested reputation and is the "first love" for many owners. The Bushmaster was born in the era of plane jacking terrorists (70s) and kicked it's own share of butt to earn it's reputation. BUT there is a krinkle to this story. Colt was founded in 1836 and still going strong with all that history and experience. Bushmaster was founded in 1973 and recently sold to Cerberus Capital Management - New York bean counters. The original Bushmaster team went on to start another company called Windham Weaponry. Soooooo, Colt is still a Colt and Windham was the original Bushmaster and the new Bushmaster is well...essentially new company who bought the Bushmaster name and MFG specs. In my opinion, get a Colt and let the dust settle on the other two. But, if you still want a Bushmaster, check out Windham Weaponry.
I own both a colt and a bushmaster platform ar, both are excellent weapons. I have inspected both weapons in the walmart store, and straight from the box I prefer the Colt, as it had the heavier M-16 bolt carrier. Both will do what you want, I just prefer that particular bolt carrier, and could replace the one in the bushmaster with no problem, but then I would be in the cost range of the Colt.
They are both fine weapons, but remember Colt was the one of if not the first to manufacture the M16/AR15,that being said most current AR platforms are well made.Check out Wyndam Weaponry

The Colt is a better weapon. This is the standard and all others work to be it.
Most likely, unless you are very familiar with the AR and its variants, you will not be able to tell the difference. It does cost more than the Bushmaster (which is actually a Remington), if you are thinking of Bushmaster because of its reputation you need to buy a Windham (made by the old Bushmaster people). In the end, it comes down to what you want having owned both I would say pay the extra and get the Colt.
