kind of....you have to pay $45.00 (plus tax) on a certain day each month. when you need to "refill" you go to walmart and buy a card and call the 800# on the back and do it, and it'll tell you when you need to do it again #every 30 days# and since its "unlimited" for the $45 you wouldnt have to buy minutes if you run out...

The short answer is NO. They will throttle your Internet speed or cut off your service.

The long answer:

Been a Straight Talk customer for about 8 months now, and this will be my last month with this carrier. What initially made Straight Talk attractive to me was their promise of unlimited talk, text and web for only $45/month, and being able to use my AT&T branded/locked Motorola Atrix HD Android powered smartphone.

The big problem with Straight Talk is that their service is NOT unlimited. If you exceed an unknown daily data/web usage limit, they will cut your Internet speed down to a crawling halt, making simple emails almost impossible. Some people claim it's 2GB/month before it happens - that's a myth. They have computers setup, that automatically calculate your usage on a daily basis, and the usage threshold is pretty low.

I have had this happen to me after one weeks use, and all I did was write emails, check Facebook, read news articles online and download a few app off the Google Play Store.

The next problem occurs when you call their support department. First you speak with a customer rep, who's accent is so thick you'll barely understand the person. They'll next tell you that you violated section 6 and 7 of the terms of service - which basically says they have the right to cut your Internet speed (throttle), or terminate your service if your data usage is 'excessive'.

Problem here being that they won't tell you exactly what 'excessive data usage' means, or at what point you reach that limit. When I asked them what the daily or monthly data usage limit is, and what amount of use would be considered 'excessive', the Straight Talk customer rep's answer was simply that the service is unlimited as long as your usage for data/Internet/text/calls is not excessive.

So there you have it folks - It's unlimited talk/text/data/Internet…Except it's not. And you'll have no idea when they'll cut you off, because they won't tell you, and it's not mentioned anywhere in their 'Terms of Service' (TOS).

For folks with dumbphones, this might be a good option for you, since you probably won't consume much data if any. However, if you have an Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, Black Berry, Nokia Symbian, or any other smartphone, you'll probably want to think twice, or trice, before going with Straight Talk, since you'll more than likely get into trouble with them sooner or later.

For the smartphone user who wants a cheap prepaid service, there are many other options than Straight Talk, and all of those alternatives will outright tell you what your data usage limit is before throttling occurs - if it occurs.

Both Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile offer plans with 2.5GB of high-speed data before throttling, and T-Mobile just launched GoSmart Mobile, which offers a whole 5GB of data before slowing you down. With those companies, you'll at least know where you stand, and how much data you can consume before being throttled...

Yes with an app, but I wouldn't recommend it as Straight Talk says it's prohibited in their Terms and Conditions. and they might cut your service off.

Short answer: you don't (online anyway).

Explanation: Straight talk will give you whatever provider that works in your area. If there are multiple providers in your area the service provider you have depends on which phone you have. For example, my phone works on sprint service and I hate it. A friend of mine wanted the same phone but didn't want the spotty service. So she went on a trip out of town and got a phone that used att service at another Wal-Mart. How did she know? Supposedly the number on the bottom right hand corner of the box that says something like CDMA-S. The "S" stands for Sprint in this case. I don't know what all the providers "letters" are, but I'm sure you could figure it out. I hope this helps.

It used to be that Walmart would code each phone at the end of its title on the website description. They now have removed those codes. However, the box in which the phone is packaged still has the code on the front left corner so if you are in a Walmart store and can see the boxes on the display, you will see the following codes:

GSM-A = AT&T
CDMA-V = Verizon
CDMA-S = Sprint
GSM = T-Mobile or AT&T

If you were to have looked at this webpage about a month ago, after the title to this phone, you would have seen: "GSM-A"

Currently on the Walmart website, the only hint will be the model number of some phones (but not all). If it ends in "G" it will be a GSM phone on AT&T or T-mobile. If it ends in "C" it will be a CDMA phone or on Verizon or Sprint.

Next time you're in a Walmart store, look at the Straight Talk display and examine the front of the box of any given phone. The code will be printed on the lower corner.

Here is an example ...not for this phone, however, but just to show where the code is located on the box (copy-and-paste):

I tried putting in an AT&T sim card, but the Tracfone screen still pops up when booting up the phone, and I got an error message when I tried to make a call ("No service available", perhaps).

I think the only way to put in another card would be to root the phone, and I don't know if a custom ROM is available for the Straight Talk version of the phone.

You can only pay one month at a time with this phone?

I see the phone details say "Only works with Straight Talk $45/30-Day Unlimited Service Plan" Does this mean that every 30 days I have to buy a new card or can I have more than 30 days built up on this phone?
