the phone does have a sound message alert. check your sound settings
Yes S390G does sound the text message.
S380C Is a CDMA phone and S390G is a GSM phone, where CDMA does not allow simultaneous tasks such as speaking on the phone and receiving a text alert.
That's not a phone issue, it's the way CDMA is designed. CDMA could allow simultaneous function but providers Verizon and Sprint have not implemented. The situation only improves somewhat if you own a smart phone.
Again, S380C works as designed. If you want functionality you would buy a GSM phone, with "G" in the model name.
I own two S390Gs and they're great though they are not high end smart phones, ie. you get what you pay for with prepaid services.
THIS PERTAINS TO THIS QUESTION ONLY REGARDING THE S380C:

Yes, but you must set it up within a "sound profile". I'm hoping your phone works this same way...Go to settings, then choose sound profile. There are several sound profiles you can customize with ring and text tones. You can't change the names of the sound profiles themselves (normal, silent, driving, outdoor, etc) but you have many options for tones within each profile. Then you choose the profile you want active at any given time.
Yes, but you set it up within a "sound profile". You choose settings, then sound profile. You have various sound profiles that you can customize with ring tones and text alert tones: Normal, Silent, Driving, Outdoor. Although you can't change the names of the sound profiles themselves, you can change/silence the ring and text tones within each profile as you wish. For example, when I go to sleep and don't want to be woken by a text message tone, I choose my "driving" profile because I have set that one to silent for texts. When I wake up I select "normal" profile for the day.
